Very well put Bob. GM and BiaB go hand in hand and I hope that never changes. However PGMusic could do a little more to make GM sound a little better by using non-quantized backing tracks, much like what they call SuperMidiTracks, which are really just non-quantized tracks.
But as you said to get a more realistic sounding emulation you will need a much better sound source than GM and a little MIDI control knowledge.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
