Your version of this spiritual evergreen, In the Sweet By and By, hurtled me back in time to my childhood experiences of Sunday (all-day) church-going and, sadly, funeral ceremonies, in which I heard the congregation and/or the attendees of the funeral services sing this song with such quietly powerful reverence that it caused my young eyes to burst into tears.
The way you recorded it has a more ‘lonely’ sound that what I am accustomed to, but it serves to magnify the message of faith inherent in the lyrics, if only because each one of us will make our departure from this Earth alone, in a physical sense, that is.
You captured all of the hopeful yearning for the promise of eternal peace that the song has provided for its listeners since it was composed over one hundred-fifty years ago.

Maybe SC is at fault but the track is so quiet that I had to turn my monitors to max gain to listen.
At such low volume (I don't use headphones) it was difficult to pick up on the dynamics and nuances of the production.
Like Blueage both of us are very familiar with this tune from childhood. I (Bud) first remember hearing it in a wood frame country church on a dirt road in south GA. It was always a favorite.
I'll check it out again to see if SC squashed the volume temporarily.

Thanks for listening and commenting, folks. The message is indeed powerful, bluage. It is also a great opportunity to "sing the vowels." Bud, I've had ongoing volume issues mostly on account of experimenting around with technique, trying to create a certain feel. Eventually, I'll get it  Coincidentally, "On a Dime" always comes up next on my playlist -- what a contrast!

Oh well, goes with my being a fan. I am going to try to remix and upload before time allowed to edit expires. <PS Are you using a limiter on your final mix?> What does that mean? I keep it just under the red on Reaper. This one, I think the actual recording was soft -- miked the speaker.  ** Note: See if that is any better. Quick remix with Audacity and turned it up.

Nice work on this - I found it to be a really warm rendition. Definitely a nostalgic tune, and the way it is executed here almost gives it a haunting vibe. I like how gentle it is though - you did it some real justice. Thanks for sharing

Ed, Volume issue seems fixed... and that plangent lonely tone in your voice comes through well. Bent piano is perfect for the song. Very enjoyable!

Thanks, peoples. Good ears, good sense. I hear the terms haunting, plangent, plaintive, lonely, warm, authentic, soothing ... I mean, this really encourages me to develop this style, although, I'll tell ya, consistency from tune to tune is a problem for me. Not all my own, I'm sure. The suggestion is to continue to try to understand the nature of the effect and how to reproduce it reliably. I know I don't seek symphonic, are not seeking hypnotic. Artist's dilemma, isn't it: seeking to understand self in the context of the greater nature, not as an end in itself. I need to find a way to break out the piano from the BB wav renderings and transfer the two, in sync, without going through the time consuming and tedious process of transferring from the HD (Reaper tweaked or BB Renders) to the separate tracks on the Tascam's storage card. That will give me full control of the piano in the last phases (that's important) of post production. Most everyone here uses DAW, and might find my dilemma foreign. It is one of those things makers of digital decks (Zoom, Tascam, Boss) have not addressed, as far as I know. To sound right, that piano volume has to be nailed down in final stages of mixdown. John Jarvis is a Real Tracks treasure. So is Brent Mason. Sorry for the novel.
