Here is my October song. Number 13 in my song a month challenge for 2019. I have a cold so I'm not enthused with the vocal, but I've got a deadline to meet (albeit self imposed).

Bass - 366 Bass, Electric, Country
Guitar1 - 365 Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking
Drums - NashvilleEven8
Guitar2 - 362 Guitar, Acoustic Strumming
Guitar3 - 2691 Guitar, Electric, Soloist CountryBalladSimple
Vocal Oohs - 3064 Vocal Oohs, Rhythm Pop3-part

Main Vocal - Troy Schiewe (me)
Harmonies - Generated with BIAB

Each track generated and saved as a wave file and then mixed with Reaper.

Baby Please Come Home

Walking down these streets greeting every smile I meet
I Seem like a regular happy guy
But since you went away my troubles are here to stay
I've been cry cry crying crying all night long

Darling since you left me I think I've gone insane
I'm hardly eating breathing or alive
Baby please come home oh baby please come home
My baby please come home I need you by my side

Since you've gone away I've found a new place to stay
Down on lonely street heart break hotel
They've got a little bar and it helps to ease these scars
I keep drink drink drinking drinking all night long

Darling since you left me I think I've gone insane
I'm hardly eating breathing or alive
Baby please come home oh baby please come home
My baby please come home I need you by my side
Baby please come home I need you by my side

Really great song, I especially loved the lyrics but in particular this part:

"Since you've gone away I've found a new place to stay
Down on lonely street heart break hotel
They've got a little bar and it helps to ease these scars"

Thanks for sharing!

An enjoyable production Troy.

Really liked the mix, and the harmonies gave richness and depth.

All around a great delivery.

Troy,
your vocals are the star as is appropriate.
Well done with the harmonies.
Would you mind listing your signal chain &/or processing sequence for vocals?
I think many folk, myself included, struggle to record and sit vocals. A little idea of how you manage to do so well would be a useful thing.

Cheers

Mr. Schiewe...

Concerning your vocal track, I wouldn't have known you had a cold if you hadn't mentioned it. In fact, it sounds pretty powerful to me. The loneliness and pain in the lyrics is convincingly expressed in your voice. The lyrics themselves are vivid and straightforward.

I have gradually come to the conclusion that the country Real Styles in Band-in-a-Box sound really good. The vocal ooo's are a nice addition to the song, too.

I hope 'she' comes home !!! smile

Troy,

Pretty tune . . . like those soft harmonies in the chorus . . . nicely executed. The production is stellar as well—clean and really resonates. The vocals sounds just fine to me, Troy. Well done!

Kind regards,

Deej

Vocals shine. liked the "Oohs" and well balanced harmonies. Just the right amount of "pop" in the drums. Enjoyed the listen.

Great mix with shining vocals (cold? no problem). Enjoyed it a lot, as usual.

Hey Ray,

I'm far from an expert, but would love to share exactly what I do. I've got some family stuff happening this weekend, but look for it sometime Monday.

As promised, here is exactly what I did with my vocal on this track. In the order they were applied

- The vocal track was recorded using BIAB and a Blue Yeti mic. Nothing fancy here. I should be using some sort of damping in the room, but circumstances don't really allow for that right now.

- The track was then exported as a .wav file with no reverb.

- The vocal was then imported in to reaper on a separate track.

- A Gate (Cockos ReaGate) was added to the track to kill any background noise or any hiss that the track may have between the vocal phrases.

- Izotope Ozone 8's Imager was used to add stereo width. In this case "Stereoize" was set to 20ms with "Band 2" set to 63.3 and "Band 3" set to 100.
"Band 1 & 4" were set to 0.

- Izotope Nectar 2 was used to process the vocal. I used most of a factory preset "Bright and Clean" with a bit of tinkering.

------- Saturation was set to "Tube" with an "Amount"of 68.8% and the "Mix"set to 41.5%
------- Compressor1 was set as follows "Threshold" = -11.1, "Character" = Vintage, "Ratio" = 3.8:1, "Attack" = 1ms, "Release" = 102ms
------- Compressor2 was set as follows "Threshold" = -18.4, "Character" = Digital, "Ratio" = 18.4:1, "Attack" = 1ms, "Release" = 6ms
------- EQ (what I tinkered with) was used to kill some of the Bass and brighten the Highs a bit
------- De-Esser was used
------- Reverb was set to "Pre-Delay" = 0.0 ms, "Decay" = 1.8s, "Width" = 100%, "Wet" = 20.5%, "Dry" = 100%
------- Delay was set to "Mode" = Digital, "Delay" = 200.00ms, "Feedback" = 20.0%, "Width" = 100%, "Wet" = 5.1%, "Dry" = 80.0%

- Within Reaper the track was cut up into individual phrases and had their volumes played with to even out the overall volume of the track in relation to itself.

- Final mixing with the rest of the tracks was then completed.

I should add that I'd be willing to try mixing something for some one if asked.

Cheers,

Troy

Hi Troy,

This is a great listen. And thanks a ton for giving such detailed information on how your processed the tracks (especially the vocals).

I'm sitting here listening right now and your mix is stunning... it's warm and inviting and very, very friendly on my ears. Your vocals are outstanding.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening.

All the best,
Noel

Really good country song with inventive lines and quotes of the classics. Your vocal and delivery is clearly the star and the band supports it very well. The mix is excellent and sounded good on the phones at mid volume. I might have wished for a faster tempo. I think it might have both upped the energy and helped with the long held notes--not "fast", but a bit faster. Of course, that's just me in the mood I'm in at the moment. Much enjoyed.
