Hi All,
I have come across some strange behaviour with regard to the timing of a midi file that I imported into RB.
The song I know is in 3/4 time and it plays correctly with this timing when imported to RB. The problem is this, it is reported as being in 4/4. Now if I do nothing and play the file, everything sounds OK but doesn't fit with the bars in Chord Sheet and Track Sheet.

That is what made me notice the time signature issue in the first place. So I changed the time signature in RB to 3/4, but although the divisions have now changed, the timing is little better. It seems that the number of ticks per beat is specified differently for the midi file than should be specified for running with RB.

It looked like I needed to stretch or compress all tracks.

Has anybody come across this behaviour?

People can create a great playing midi file yet fail to set the correct time sig, key sig and tempo. Once it's recorded all you can change is the key without learning how to edit the header info. I know it's possible it's just not that important to me. I try to find a better file or create the song in Biab.

Bob is spot on. Some people do like things just so people can not easily use their mid files with their personal songs.

Some mid files sound like they are in 3/4 but are written in different time signatures to mess with our minds; time signatures like 6/8, 9/8 or 12/8.

Having had a good look at the midi on the track view with 3/4 time set, it begins to feel like the midi was created from a live performance and I need to stretch the midi to get it to fit at a specific tempo.

HI Jonel

If as you say the midi was recorded live ,rather than notes entered in a sequencing program in notation mode. It may be worth having a look at Quantizing it to pull the notes on to beat choose the resolution you req 1/8 or 1/16 notes don’t over do it.

Many MIDI files use varying tempos in a song. It sounds like you have one here. Here are a few suggestions on getting the tempo.

I don't use RealBand but I just looked and it does have a tempo map that will show you all of the tempo changes in the MIDI file.

Many DAWs have a MIDI editor that will show all of the MIDI data in the file. If RB has that you might be able to delete all but the first tempo data.

There are programs that will make a tempo track based on either MIDI or audio data. Melodyne Editor is one. Some DAWs like Cubase and Sonar also have ways to make a tempo track from any MIDI or audio track.

All of this assumes that RB can use a tempo track. As I said I don't use RB but as a DAW it should be able to follow a tempo track. Someone who uses RB will be able to answer this question and help with determining the tempo track.

If all else fails PM me and I will determine the tempo track. If for some reason RB doesn't use a tempo track I can assign one tempo to the file so you can use it.

Good luck.

Thank your help Mike and Mario. I appreciate the offer of help as well Mario. The thing is, I don't really need the song that much, it just that I can't leave it alone and I have so many other things I could do with my time!

Audio Chord Window to the rescue!

Tell it to not change the chords and just create a Tempo map if so desired (a checkbox when it launches). Or have it take a stab at the chords also.

It will analyze the song and guess at the tempos.
If it misses you can play it and tap the F8 key on the first beat of each measure .. ACW will calculate the tempo you tap and recreate the aforementioned Tempo Map.

ACW; it's not just for chords. smile

[Edit]
I did this video a few years back, so a little dated but it gives the basics for ACW. Don't worry that your song is a MIDI file instead an MP3 like I started with; when the ACW launches, if you select use current song it will autoconvert everything to audio for use in the ACW.
But when you decide to send the info back to RB/PT only the tempo map and chords get changed.

If nervous, make a copy first, but you said this song wasn't that important, you just wanted to solve the issue.
This couple minute video shows you the basics on how the ACW works. It really is a pretty cool tool PGMusic created.

Thanks, but not to sure about this. I don't have any audio tracks in the song.

Sorry for the multiple edits
After thinking this thru you may be right; the ACW doesn't actually move MIDI events.
There is a newer feature for a 'Click track' that may help. It allows auto-aligning tracks to a separate click track .. I haven't dabbled much with this but know others have had success with it

From Manual
Quote:
Align Music to Click Track
This feature attempts to align a track of music that was recorded in free time to a click track. It tries to take a free time track and make adjustments to the times of the events so that the music becomes a standard track that can be synced to a metronome.
You can now easily record a click track along with any audio and/or MIDI, and then have RealBand automatically line up everything with tempo and time signature changes. This can have many useful applications. For example, if you recorded a strumming guitar in free time, RealBand can line it up to the grid so you can add loops, RealDrums, or RealTracks. Or, if you have just purchased a song from iTunes, you can have it line up to the grid in RealBand to make it easier for you to learn. Or, if you have recorded MIDI (not to a click track), and you can have that MIDI line up to the grid without affecting the actual performance.
