An old rule of thumb in learning the Circle of Fifths is that any chord can come after the I chord but after that use the Circle of Fifths to get back to the I chord. For instance say one puts a B chord after the I chord C. Using the Circle of Fifths the chord progression would be C-B-E-A-D-G-C. But these do not have to be all triads as you can add 7ths, 9ths, b13s, etc. So that progression could be something like C-Bm13, E7add 11, Adim, D11, G9 Cmaj7.
