I have been working with Peter Gannon's version 7 New features
video and at 13:40 he explains what aliases are but I'm not following it. Any help?

I don't even see style aliases addressed anywhere on any menus. Was it superseded by something different? options is shorter now and User isn't even a menu any more. Can anyone elaborate

From the user's manual: Let’s say you’ve got a new style for Jazz called “Wynt_K.” You can create an alias so that when Band-in-a-Box looks for a Jazz Swing style, it will load in “Wynt_K” instead, so you don’t have to make changes to all your songs. And when you have found a new favorite style, just change the alias. You can also load or save sets of “Alias” files and share them with others. Style aliases allow you to play back a song using the aliased, rather than the originally specified style. Don't know how it works if there are multiple styles in a song or if specified track instruments have been replaced. But a lot of files that you can download from the internet all use ZZJazz as the style; with an alias, you could play back those files with a different style that you like better.

Search for Alias in the Help. They are mentioned in several places, viz:
Style Aliases
You can create an alias so that when Band-in-a-Box looks for a style, it will load its alias instead, so when you have found a new favorite style just change the alias and you don’t have to change all of your songs. Aliases are stored in files called *.ALI. The DEFAULT.ALI is "no aliases."
