Hello, I've been slaving away for some time trying to create some backing tracks and all I'm getting is totally frustrated. Is BB completely unstable? It keeps doing wierd things like freezing the screen so I can't scroll up or down and I have to shut it down and re-start or songs work one minute then they go completely nuts with RTs replaced by midi for no reason and the lastest is this:

Access violation at address 0089037D in module 'bbw.exe'. Write of address 00011110 at: 0089037D

when I hit the play button and I can't get rid of it which makes the song completely worthless and I've got re-do hours of work.

I'm sorry this is a mad rant but I am totally peeved and ready to send it back. Can anyone offer any guidance at all? I realise I'm not giving much useful info but I've got no idea what to provide. I'm running 2010 build 292 on WIndows XP

There are upgrades available (build 294 is out) with fixes for some of those problems. Give it a try.

Hi
Are you using ASIO or MME drivers, I get errors when using the ASIO drivers with my soundcard so resort to MME.

I have 2 xp systems and both run just fine. You have something wrong in the computer settings, bit rates, drivers or some other issue. You need to post those settings, do the updates. Xp is the most stable and reliable system at the moment.

You could also post your cpu/memory soundcard, asio or mme settings, along with anything else that might help.

If you were running Vista it would be another matter. My vista system runs but gives me nothing but grief. Microsoft should be paying us a hundred bucks to put Windows 7 on our machines for the grief they caused. I bet they even made some people jump of bridges.....

While not knowing enough about your operating sysyem I still can't help but think that if you have all the patches installed the issue may be with your computer. With this said I was having similar issues until I took Mac's advice below:
Hey Danny--

You may find joy with one or more of the following tweaks on that old laptop:

*Change Processor Scheduling to 'Background Services'

Control Panel ->System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> and set Processor Scheduling to "Background Services".

Incidentally, this is a very good thing for anyone trying to run ASIO sound drivers to do also. ASIO is a Background Service. But now that we know that the Fast RealTracks loading is a Background Service also, it may just be one of the few tweaks we need to do in XP as a matter of course.

*Defrag the C: drive.
Do a Disk Cleanup first, then run Defrag. Ignore Windows when it says you don't need to defrag, just do it.

*Set your disk swap cache size manually

Control Panel ->System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> System Cache

Now select the manual setting where you enter your size and enter a size that is twice your physical ram size. W/768 ram, that would be 1536, okay to just round it to 1500 or any number near there. i doubt if it is a lack of ram. FWIW.

These teaks within my system made all right with my world of making music with BIAB 2010 again. Hopefully it will be as simple for you.

Later,

Oh, and another speed up is to slow down the graphics card settings. Depends on yer Cee Pee Eeeywhuu..

I know that stinks but some systems are way slower.

Hello and thanks for all the good advice. I'll see what I can dig up on the settings etc but I don't actually know where to find all that stuff off the bat. I cerainly don't have any idea what the difference is between ASIO and MME except here in Oz, ASIO is the secret service organisation like the CIA!!!

Hi,

If you are just needingbackingh tracks then just use MME drivers as many users with different set-ups have had trouble with ASIO drivers mine being inconsistancy

You only need ASIO to reduce latency if you are using a connected keyboard at the same time for making backing tracks latency not a problem and MME drivers are stable

You will find a lot of answers under - Help > Topics

I will be in Adelaide in March getting ready for the festival

OK I went into Options and I reckon I have MME Audio driver set also Audio Latency is set to 488mS. On Audio/MIDI Drivers it is showing "General MIDI Instrument Misc." for Synthesizer/Sound Card.

For the computer itself I found this:
Processor: Pentium M processor 1.80GHz
Processor Speed: 1.75GHz
Memory: 1024MB
Operating system: XP Professional 5.1.2600

Sound Card info:
Recording and playback: Sigma Tel C-Major Audio, Driver Version 5.10.0.3952 2004
MIDI music playback: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

I recently deleted a heap of stuff off my hard drive and defragged it. I'm running BIAB from teh 160 GB HDD.

OK now I'm going to try to put some of the advice above into effect. Wish me luck...

I wouldn't use the Microsoft synth. In the Opts menu click on midi and check the Dxi, assuming you installed it. In the pull down menu choose the Vsc Dxi and put it first. You can experiment with other stuff underneath later, like eq and reverb etc, though the reverb is built in now.

Other than that the software should run fine, albeit a bit slow for the system does not have a lot of memory. I'd think about making sure nothing else is running in order to be able to use Realtracks etc....

andrew .the key to all this is not only useing a suitable computer but also
a suitable sound device.
problems can be seen on many recording forums. and its independent
of daw software used.
many of us use various daw software without probs.
i'm on xp myself.
the basic problem is puters these days are marketed as plug n play.
but the reality is often some tweaking on the users part is required.
in your case one aspect might be memory..cos the OS itself needs
memory. as well as the music software.
a way to check this is >>>xp task manager.
bring up xp task manager and monitor memory useage while useing the music software.
run tests etc etc to try and reproduce the problem your haveing.
all the time useing xp task manager to monitor memory useage.
if you see that memory useage is high and your reaching limits
you might have to run a test with more memory to see if the problem goes away.
this is one aspect..not enough memory.
also what happens is that xp will use the hard drive in your pc to create
virtual memory on the drive. BUT if your useing the same drive for the
win OS AND to record to as well as win useing the hard drive for virtual memory..
the poor likkle hard drive might not be able to keep up performance wise
cos its being asked to do too much. i suspect your useing a slow hard
drive...a 5400 rpm,..correct ?? this is another aspect.
so what a lot of people do is keep win xp on the internal drive and record//playback from a seperate hard drive.
then there is another aspect ...the sound device used.
choosing the correct sound device is very important.
on board sound can be problematic. some people do use it...
but its not advised. its best to get a proper sound interface with good drivers.
another aspect is the processor. it needs to be powerfull enough.
i suspect this is a laptop correct ??
if not done so already run dpc latency checker on your system and report back.
it will give you an indication of how well your system performs for audio work.
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
if you see red spikes this is another clue.
the previous poster mentioned useing the correct plug in rather than the on
board synth which frankly is prefereable.
as you can see there are many aspects.
sometime read my tips in the tips n triks section for more info etc etc.
my suspicion without being there (thus its difficult to comment further...)
is that your pc needs some tweaking etc etc.
i would run tests with more memory , a proper sound device,
and a dedicated drive to record to etc.
some might disagree...but ...i have to be honest with you...
if were me i would use that pc
for the net and home/personal finance activities , and get
a desktop quad core pc with lots of ram and two hard drives.
or look for a cheap refurb with warrranty mate.
one drive for win and one for recording plus a decent sound interface.
(zzounds.com has a list of interfaces.)
all the best.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
