I am trying to import a MIDI with a 6/8 meter into BIAB 2019 using Windows 10. I created the MIDI with Musescore using a 6/8 time signature, but when I import it into BIAB, it changes the lengths of all the notes, even if I am using a style with a 6/8 time signature. Is there a way to get BIAB to import the MIDI with the correct interpretation of note length? Mixcraft has no trouble figuring out the note length.
Is there a way you can redo your midi file so each 6/8 bar is written as two bars of 3/4? Band-in-a-Box only understands 3/4 and 4/4. Other time signatures like 6/8 or 12/8 are derived from 3/4. One bar of 6/8 can be counted as 6/8 over two bars. Sometimes the choices are "it can print out correctly" or "it can sound correct" but it seems rare when both happen.
With this in mind, if I was writing a song in 6/8 that I wanted to import into BIAB, I'd actually notate it in 4/4 using eighth note triplets where half a bar of 4/4 is equal to one bar of 6/8. That is, half a bar contains two groups of eighth note triplets.
This will import fine and there are some really great 12/8 styles based on 4-beats per bar, and some swing styles, that will sit really comfortably with the melody.
For example, the image below shows how I've translated four bars of music in 6/8 into 4/4. While writing eighth note triplets in 2/4 is more appropriate to 6/8, since both are duple time signatures, 4/4 is much better suited to BIAB from a 'finding suitable styles' perspective when the melody is loaded.
