I've read this with great interest. Lots of thought provoking comments. And it's cool to read about the diversity of approaches. As a person who played in acoustic bands for 30 years (and not once with a drummer) Iam, somewhat needless to say, challenged by the use of drums and most electric instruments and keyboards. At this stage in the game I've decided to try and "do no harm" meaning I try to select and mix drums, amp sims, keys, etc., that if they are not particularly interesting then at the least they aren't "wrong" for my groove. That alone has taxed my old brain over the past six BiaB years! So I let Janice carry the heavy load and I try not to get in the way Bud
Our albums and singles are on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora and more. If interested search on Janice Merritt. Thanks! Our Videos

So I go out to lunch and get away from the computer for a bit and all heck breaks loose in the forum. An awful lot here to ponder on! Rest assured I will go back and read it all again to be sure not to miss a thing. Pieces are coming together for me, but it will take a lot of thought to really conclude what this all means to me and my music. On one hand I understand as well as any, "a man has to know his limitations", but on the other hand, I so enjoy every aspect of making music it is hard to focus on what is most important. And all the while time continues marching by... Thanks for the great input guys...

Hey Dan, another perspective! Thanks for the feedback sir! That was very interesting and informative. Cheers brother! Thank you and ditto. @Dan... so my last contributing input... This is BIAB RTS. So…took me a few minutes to find but here is one example I can find that has never been used on any pedal demo or such by me (And the link is private because there is no BT like this on the web and it'll get downloaded and posted on YT before I can use it first, LOL!!) This was done in BIAB 2016 - Robben Fords ‘Nothing To Nobody’ backing track. I used his Live At The New Morning Paris arrangement. THIS is obviously Real Drums for those in the knnow and other RTS…I am playing Bass and Guitar and of course cutting, chopping pasting parts to make this work. ** Link Removed by RG (Till the track gets used!!) ** So…this combination of RT drums coming out of BIAB like this, does not exist, I had to get creative with cutting pasting fills, riffs, cymbal hits etc… to keep the energy ‘realistic’ and to keep the drums to both 'lead and follow' the arrangment. LONG versions are made of the progression and then I go find usable ‘fills’ and put them aside. Good drummers often repeat themselves any way with subtle changes. Dan this would have taken me a 2-3 hours for drums (just cutting pasting) as I am familiar with the process. But it CAN sound like a ‘reasonable band demo…’ to me… Cheers, RG

Wow, those drums are really brought to life! Nice to know that if you spend a little time on it, you can get them sounding even better.

Sitting here with a wee smile on my face as I listen to the drums - ya, that is more like it. Much more life and variety. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face on this cloudy snowy day. Time to leave the office early and play with my music.. Oh, if only that were possible.

A few ways to create more realistic drums.
1. Record a track that can be used as a guide track. It can be as simple as you humming while clapping your hands or tapping a foot and play an instrument. Note: Why not record guide tracks in mono? The intent is they will never be heard so smaller file is better for storage.
2. Run the recorded track through the audio or midi chord wizard. Import the tempo map for sure and the chords if desired.
Just the imperfections inherent in using a human generated tempo map should up the realism a lot.
3. Replace RealDrums audio with midi audio for a bar or two. Maybe make one or two custom fills. Adds a little variety without too much work.
4. EQ for the most important drum throughout the song. Depending on the bar it maybe the kick, snare, toms, high-hat or cymbal but one should shine each bar.
5. Investigate the loops! There's shakers, tambourines all the way up to full kits.
