I am running Realband 2008.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate, on an HP 2140 mini notebook. I set the audio to MME and selected the microphone (built-in) as the input driver, but when I press record it says "Couldn't open the wave device" . It does the same when I select soundmapper as the input.
Windows sound recorder works, so I know the hardware and operating system can record OK.

Windows sound recorder is a poor example of what works, because it is an embedded feature of windows. Programs like PTW, RB, and such rely on actually setting up the drivers internally in the program to connect the programs with the sound cards.
Sadly the built in sound cards are not really up to audio and midi recording. If you want to really get this thing working properly then you need to save up and purchase an external sound card/interface. These are deigned to record and sum the signals up at the input and output sources.

I understand that the internal device is not good quality, and I have an external USB recording device on the way.
It worries me that Realband (and PowerTracks 12 by the way) both can't open the wave device under my installation of Windows 7. I am going to try Audacity now as well to see, but I hope it's not a Windows 7 compatibility problem.

OK, tried Audacity and it didn't work either. However I googled some info about Audacity and there are some changes in Windows later versions. In control panel, under sound, under the recording tab, you need to right click and display disabled devices, then enable the Stereo mix device, then right click it and set it as default, and also communications default (2 different settings). Doing the above gets Audacity recording and playing back.
However Realband (and Powertracks still have troubles). From a fresh start, Realband was able to record - once! trying to play back that recording fails with 'unable to open wave device'. Subsequent recording attempts fail with the same error.
I admit, my understanding of Windows 7 sound is very limited, but I can't seem to get this working.

Dazz i wouldnt even bother with on board sound mate. but if you must try this www.asio4all.comhopefully it works under w7. check on the site. then youll need to set things up in rb audio preferences. some time read my tips in the tips n triks area of the forum. also read carefully all pg helps n manuals etc on audio prefs set up.
