I often feel reading here that folks are treating BB/RB as if it was Abbey Road.So much seems aimed at the Toys For Boys Brigade.
Apart from the new RTs and Packs what is there in 2020 to make EASIER the life of an"Arranger"who simply wants to create backings from Styles by tapping in the chords on screen? It sounds great to have 50 NEW features but have they fixed ANY of the back catalogue of existing niggles becasue I cant see it mentioned anywhere?
I have $227 resting on an honest answer
Wendy

Hi Wendy. You are correct that the main reason to update each year would be content, the new RealTracks and styles. I've extracted three of the newer features that I think will make the most impact:

There are enhancements to RealTracks (Smoother Sounding Vocal RealTracks, RealTracks Thickening, "Find-a-Sub" RealTracks, and MultiRiffs).

Equalize Tempo allows changing a recorded legato song to a fixed tempo.

Feature Browser allows the new or "forgetful" user to easily find and use most features/hotkeys/docs from a single window.

The niggles of which you speak, assuming that means things like 4 chords/bar, 255 measure limit, etc. are to my knowledge unchanged. However, the Plugin continues to improve and holds promise to get around some of the limitations we have experienced, such as the number of tracks.

Hi Wendy

Just to add to what Matt said. Other great new features include Multiriffs which was previously only in the vst plugin and RealBand. This is a way of easily producing 7 different versions of a RealTrack at one time so that you can choose the one which suits your song best. You also cut and paste from any of them to produce your ideal take. Very useful for guitar solos or similar. Another feature is ‘Find a Sub’ ideal method to quickly find alternative RealTracks to the one you have chosen if your choice is nearly right then ‘Find a Sub’ will locate similar-sounding RealTracks to choose from.

I think there’s plenty of features to suit a wide variety of needs

RealBand has multi-riff. The Band-in-a-Box plug-in has multi-riff. 2020 Band-in-a-Box has multi-riff.

Wendy, if you haven't used RealBand or the plug-in you may be wondering what multi-riff is and how it will help the simple user.

Multi-riff is multiple, simultaneous generations of a RealTrack. If you've ever had to generate a track more than once to obtain a track you like multi-riff will save you time.

Imagine using a saxophone RealTrack and you don't like the way it plays a fill. In the past you generated the whole saxophone track losing the good parts. Now, you can generate seven riff variations all using the same RealTracks. Plus since you select what bars generate, the original parts of the track that you like remain. Seven generations in the time it use to take to do one plus you keep the good. Big time saver.

Besides all the other new items, the Multi-Riff is possibly the best and likely to be the most widely used new feature in 2020.

The new RealTracks and Styles are always worth having IMHO.

Have you guys tried the new MultiRiffs feature in BIAB 2020? Might be best for you to give it a go before you sing its praises too loudly. Just sayin.

<< Apart from the new RTs and Packs what is there in 2020 to make EASIER the life of an "Arranger" who simply wants to create backings from Styles by tapping in the chords on screen? >>

The simple task of selecting styles and inputting chords is still available. Aside from the new RT's and Paks (Styles) don't really make use easier, what I've found both with 2019 and now 2020 is a reemphasis and updating of existing tools and techniques that are particularly useful for the simple and not so simple arrangers that use BIAB. In past versions, it seems these tools and techniques haven't been well known or otherwise widely used.

Explore and implement them into your workflow. Using BIAB in it's most basic format of entering chords, selecting a style and key, hitting play and rendering a song is always going to provide an adequate, average and predictable result. Many times it also results in a song with repetitious and recognizable riffs and earns BIAB a reputation of creating sub standard and cheesy karaoke. It's similar to having a DSLR digital camera and never taking it out of Auto Mode. Reality is a great picture taken in auto mode is an accident and the same can be said of BIAB - a great song in BIAB done on autopilot is likely an accident. Auto mode is based on averaging.

BIAB is capable of producing very complex and dynamic arrangements even by novice users and elaborate pieces can be constructed and rendered using only BIAB without the need to export to a DAW and BIAB will do all the heavy lifting.

The life of an arranger can be made easier by utilizing multiple instruments on each track. In the mixer, each channel can have up to 10 instruments. Using this feature in conjunction with bar settings (F5), very complex arrangements can be easily achieved. Possibilities are nearly limitless and a book could nearly be written just on different techniques to apply here. The results are comparable to overdubbing and punching in.

The life of an arranger can be made easier by using the overdub and punch in features in audio recording. High quality audio layers can be constructed from the Record Audio menu.

The life of an arranger can be made easier by learning the benefits and uses of bouncing sub mixes using Performance Tracks and the Audio Track. Bouncing has been around since the earliest days of multi track recorders. There have been books written on bouncing and sub mixes and these techniques can be used with the BIAB mixer. It's not difficult to learn or use.

The life of an arranger can be made easier by starting mixes with midi styles or files to integrate with song construction and arrangement using the above techniques.

PG Staff developers have set the stage for arrangers of every skill level to take BIAB productions up to the next level or beyond and make it easier than it's ever been.

It doesn't work the same as in RB.

It replaces all of the channels with the seven multi riff generations and saves the WAV files into the Drop Box Folder.

The thought is that most users will plan to move and use the multi-riffs in a DAW rather than in BIAB

The multi-riffs can be used in BIAB but there are several steps to import the audio back into BIAB

After generating the Multi Riffs, Ctrl-Z returns the channels back to the project instruments.

Wendy,

I'm basically in the 'arranger' category too and for me, new versions of BIAB are always about the new Realtracks, Realdrums and MIDI Supertracks... everything else is a bonus. I could never afford to play the musicians who do all these recordings that BIAB creates.

By the way, I'm not sure that you'll need to spend $227. If you have BIAB 2019 UltraPak or UltraPak+, the PlusPAK for $99 will give you all the new content to update 2019 UltraPak to 2020 UltraPak.

The $49 Pak, XTRA Styles* PAK ($29), LoopsPak ($19) stand outside this as separate purchases.

So all up, if you have UltraPak 2019, you can get everything going for $196.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks for asking. It took me about 30 minutes over the weekend to discover what has now been revealed in this and other threads about the Multiriffs feature. So you know now what I knew then... cry

A new BIAB is not in the cards for me this year. \

I am a simple user - I don't freeze tracks so every play is a surprise. That's the way BIAB was originally designed, and I do like it that way. Real tracks are great, but enough is enough. The same with styles, midi supertracks and drums. Plugins are beyond my needs (and capabilities) as are Realband, recording and much more. They may thrill some users, but they are not for me.

What I have really needed for years is better printed notation, and I'd even settle for fixing the bugs that have been there for 15 years. But sadly PGM, it seems cannot, or doesn't feel the need to do anything about it. Now there are users who say that BIAB is not a notation program, but notation is a functional component of the product and deserves attention. The last major change was 2004, I think, when fakesheet was introduced (along with a number of errors).

So not enough for me this year, and to be honest, for many years previously. Maybe 2021, maybe.

I have noticed once the multiriffs are created the green wav icon in the drag and drop box stays lit and will not go off even after deleting the files in the drag and drop folder or selecting New from the file menu. It seems the only way it turns off is restart the program. Is this the normal behavior?

"Equalize Tempo allows changing a recorded legato song to a fixed tempo." its not as exciting as I'd hoped. i still have to align the bar lines by hand and as the tempo of the track i'm working on isn't too bad as far as tempo variations are concerned i won't use the feature. once i've got the bar lines correct i can use loops and realtracks anyway

I was hoping (maybe madly!) I could just import an mp3 and press 'chords' and the program would sort out the bar lines

maybe next year...............

Hi Noel and thanks to everyone who posted to my thread.
Me,I like BB as it is so a few tweakeries will be good as long as they dont get in the way of my normal workflow.
My$227 is for Ultra,tha Pack8 and the $49 pack.
Reading above, the 2020 does seem to have a few teething troubles so ill keep my purse closed a few more days whilst they sort it out.But for sure Ill be buiyng 2020.
Thank you all so much and Happy Christmas.
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

In case it's useful information, I'm finding BIAB 2020 very stable to run.

I've been doing everything I normally do (and more just to make it jump through a few of the new hoops), and the program has not once crashed nor done anything different from BIAB 2019.

Regards,
Noel

BIAB 2020 has been the most stable for me of any recent year BIAB after release.

If certain conditions are present and specific selections made, The BIAB ACW will do exactly that in Version 2020! Exception is there are just a few more steps than pressing 'chords' but not many at all. It may also do it in earlier versions, I have not tested for that.

Here's what I did:

CONDITIONS:

First - This worked for me when I knew the Tempo of the audio recording... It simplifies the process. If necessary, you may need to determine the song tempo first.

. For my test, I constructed my audio file, a strumming acoustic guitar from a RealStyle, _BARD.STY; RT3339
. I constructed a 16 bar Chord Chart from the _BARD.STY demo.
. I generated a WAV of the acoustic Guitar playing the 16 bar Chord Chart
. I notated the 4/4;ev8;120;D for future reference comparisons. I took a whole page screen shot of the BIAB Main Page to compare to the ACW analysis.

PROCESS:

. Using the Open File Icon, I selected Open Audio (wav,wma,mp3,wmv,cd)
. I selected the Audio File I constructed for the test (I had named it Bard Gtr)
. BIAB generated a Yellow Sticky to set the Main Tempo
. Audio\Set Audio Master (Base) Tempo 120 <Enter>
. Confirmed Style Disabled; Start 1; End 16; 2 Bar Ending clicked in Song Settings; Tempo 120; Ev8; 4/4 and Set key to D.
. Selected the Audio Chord Wizard Button from the VIEWS Toolbar
. Activating the ACW changed End measure to 20 and Key to C.
PG Staff will be advised of this. It should be fixed.
. Reset End Measure to 16 and Key to D w/o transpose
. From the ACW Audio Editor Window selected the Analyze Button
. A Menu opened advising No Bar Lines Set and asks if I want the ACW to set bar lines based on the current tempo (which is correctly set at 120bpm)
. Select Yes
. ACW analyzed the Chords and populated the Chord Chart.

I had to make some minor changes to the Chord Chart but it took much longer to write these instructions than it did for the actual process above to run.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
