Just chiming in here about AV scanning. I often use the site virustotal.com, which aggregates many popular scanning engines in one place. The only downside is that if the file is large, you have to use an FTP client such as Cyberduck (which is free) to upload files over a certain size. It's used by many large security sites such as the Infosec Institute as part of their standard toolset when analyzing software for malware detection signatures.

One word of warning - you may get a false positive in some cases, which happened to me with Winlive Synth Driver, but it was due to the Artificial Intelligence logic in one of the engines which tries to guess at undetected malware, and after contacting my AV vendor, they got confirmed it was clean and they updated their definitions accordingly.
