Hi Floyd,

This could be an anthem for many of us. Really well done. Creative use of BiaB and the production is top-notch. Love your voice.

"For what you don't remember, there's no accounting" made me think of my old band buddy that has an excellent memory of our youthful exploits playing in rock bands (1979-1990). If it wasn't for Darren, I'd not have the accounting that's lost with time.

Bravo...

Hi Floyd,

that's another really 'floydish' song: a very thoughtful write at the end of the year, great choice of RealTracks, and like usual terrific vocals. Kudos!

All the bet for 2020 and : Keep 'em coming!

"for what you don't remember
there's no accounting
for the most part, i know just where i've been
the good the bad the in between all mixed in
wishin' and whiskey to wash away the sin"

Man, if I could write like that I'd have it put on a t-shirt smile

And what a cool alliteration on the hook line. Just drives it home.

The harp was a surprise and sounds like it was played for the tune.

Janice said: I love everything about it and his phrasing is perfect!"

The arrangement with the build is very supportive of the fine melody.

We could go on....and on.

Most excellent mr jane.

As always I am a big fan of your music. I wish I could write lyrics as good as you do.

I love this song, but if I am honest to my taste of music I would have preferred a sax (or maybe nothing) to the harmonica (well, that is just my taste.. I still really like the song).

Happy New Year!

Your lyric writing, musicality, build, selection of backings, vocal delivery and every thing else I could possibly suggest are always outstandingly sensational.

Wishin' And Whiskey is no exception.

Marvelous. Congratulations.

Trevor - I really appreciate that review.

AND... you made me call up "My Sharona". smile Haven't heard that in a long time. The definition of "catchy"... might have to write something like that.. smile

FJ,
Amazing tune to finish the year! Lyrically very strong, easy to follow without reading the script. Production is A+ (I would not expect less smile )

Late to this train.

Laid back feel, wistfully sung with a nice instrumental build. Great fit with the drums, especially at the end of the chorus. I like the way the harmonica slides in.

Your conversational lyrics feel effortless - "dares me/scares me" is a nice acceleration into the chorus.

As always, excellent work and a pleasant listen.

Hi floyd,

Ahhh... you've done it again!

That "outstanding" bar is never a problem for you and like the best of the best Olympic high-jumpers, you ALWAYS manage to clear it with plenty of air. I guess that that Old Norse word called "skill" is what it's all about.

Bud mentioned the alliteration in the hook and I agree... those four 'w' sounds on accented beats also caught my ear. That's very clever and very memorable writing!

What I really admire about the line "Wishin' and whiskey to wash away the sin" is that from a rhyming perspective, it is fully self-contained. The short 'i' sounds in "wishin" and "whiskey", along with the "-in" at the end of "wishin" all partner the final word "sin" --- I'm definitely going to look for something as streamlined as this in my next song!

Thanks for continuing to teach me all these nuances about lyric writing smile

All the best for 2020!
Noel

Nice understated feeling in the vocal and, of course, the arrangement serves the song perfectly.
A good way to toast another year!

As I typically do not read the lyrics or instrumentation prior to listening, I did NOT see the harmonica coming! lol It's part of the happy side of the contrast.

Btw, those drum lessons are paying off! I'm hearing some really nice ghosting going on. I'm a sucker for that. smile

Nice clean production.

Performed well.

What more can a guy say? Oh! Lyrics!

Below are the lyrics with my changes made :

"mistakes and regrets disappear
blended into a fading buzz
it's easy to filter to the good times
pretending that's all there was
loose and fast
reaching ever deeper into the well
stories past
the endings getting better with every tell

for what you don't remember
there's no accounting
for the most part, i know just where i've been
the good the bad the in between all mixed in
wishin' and whiskey to wash away the sin

every day that passes

the good the bad the in between all mixed in
wishin' and whiskey to wash away the sin
wishin' and whiskey to wash away the sin"

I think you will find them to be exactly the way you posted them. You have A LOT going on and yet it sounds so effortless. Actually, I will say simple. Yet, to look at how you play with concepts/thoughts is simply astounding.

If this is a pre-view of 2020, I'm even more excited than I was!

Thanks for sharing this!

Very nice vocals and well chosen instruments, super mixing and a melody that makes you very melancholic.
I like that combination.

Floyd,

Terrific lyrics here . . . first-rate write from start to finish. And really nice touches with the harmonica—the usual stellar production and vocal. Good stuff!

All the best,

The aggressive whistle/ess in "loose"
and the clicky kick drum - which seems out of context but is almost ubiquitous in RealDrums.

I always enjoy reading your comments, ray.

I KNEW you would catch that bump at "loose" and every time I heard it I thought "Ray will hit me on that...I need to fix it..." And then, I would be working on some other aspect of the mix and forget to go back to it... I've fixed it for any future use of the track (but won't update the SC track).

I am never quite sure what you mean by your "clicky kick" note (as you've noted it before)...I hear it as a "leathery thump" of a kick - which I like - a lot, I prefer it - it is the kick sound I hear in much of the music I listen to these days... So we'll mark that down to personal preference.

Thanks for you detailed listens!!

Really nice, contemplative song with lyrics that hit a lot of chords for me on a personal level. World class singing and production as usual. A lot to enjoy here.
