Copyrights don't "stop" anyone from copying anything. They just allow for a potential legal recourse if copying takes place -- if you have enough $$$$, if the song is big enough, etc.

The most famous case with George Harrison (He's so Fine vs. My Sweet Lord) went on forever and I think George bought out the publishing company in the end. (I also think the judge erred on the damages portion, but that's another story).

I say don't worry about copyrights, worry about writing that great song.
