Hi Folks,

I am the keyboardist/ Worship director at my church and I am realising that quite a bit of young people and a few older ones are interested in learning how to PLAY THE GUITAR and so, I am about to set up some Sunday afternoon 30 minutes guitar classes for Beginners. I need a great guitar course to teach them..................preferably something Visual...............as in DVD...............maybe some software too or whatever including a book or something. My approach will be to teach them how to play and understand the basic Major chords.......C....D....E...F..G.....A....B.. and then when they get proficient in these chords them ima move on to the minor chords etc. I need something not too complicated 'cause as you know, some of these folks have never played before.

Does any one have any suggestions for me in terms of some good resources to help me teach this class.

Thanks Y'all. I do hope to hear from y'all.

Hi Jacobins,

First of all good luck in teaching guitar in a group setting. This can be very trying as each student will advance at their own rate, making it very difficult to keep everyone’s attention for 30 minutes.

Second if you don’t already know, familiarize yourself with some basic guitar techniques such as finger placement, when to anchor your hand and when not to, holding a pick, double picking etc.

If students want to learn to read music I would suggest Hal Leonard’s Guitar Method book 1

This will teach the student (and you if you are not familiar with) some of the techniques I described above. It also teaches some first position chords and chord strumming. You can purchase the book alone or with a DVD.

For just learning chords I suggest Mel Bay’s Guitar Chords It shows you exactly where and how to place your fingers for chords.

Note both of these books shows you with pictures the proper techniques needed to play guitar. Also note these are the two main books I teach out of so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Good luck!

Any instrument, tablature and standard notation, DVD and CD, all levels from beginner to advanced.

No I'm not affiliated with them. I've used their products to learn to play several instruments. Most are taught by very well known musicians.

Highly recommended.

Of course eveyone learns differently.

But for me, books and videos never cut it.
(And believe me, I've tried a lot.)
Nothing beats one-on-one instruction with a good local teacher.

That being said, as far as videos go, Homespun are (for the most part) very good.
Especially the ones done by Happy Traum himself.

A few of them are available on NetFlix if you want to rent them first, though Homespun has a money-back guarantee policy too.

As far as books go, Acoustic Guitar magazine and the Berkely School of Music have Intro to guitar books.

PS: Though I think the Bass for Dummies book is very good, I wasn't too thrilled with the Guitar Dummies book.

And, as has been mentioned, there are tons of video clips on YouTube.
