Today, I downloaded som midi files from https://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=54852 and moved them to a folder I use for that kind of music. (Marching band music)

So, when I went there to load them to BiaB, they was NOT there ! After a while trying to refresh, and restart BiaB, I decided to compare the files with the one I had there from before, and observed the new ones had the extension .midi, when the ones I had used before had .mid.. So, I changed the .midi to .mid and THEN it shoved up...

I guess it just something "forgotten" to include in the file recognition in BiaB?

BTW, how many of you guys have been in a marching band as a kid or later in life? I have.. So I find it fun to make some marching band music with BiaB, just for my own listening... wink I mostly use Kontakts Brass Ensemble for this and think it sounds excellent.. Made a lot already...;)

Hi Trygve,

BIAB only recognises 3 x letters are the dot. This why it is .MID -- it's the same with .SGU, .MGU, etc.

Regards,
Noel

A three letter file extension has been 'the norm' since DOS days, and still is, in many O/S as well as Windows.

The 4 letter file extension of '.midi' is non standard, and therein lies the problem. The author of those files should have stuck to the accepted standards.

Wouldn't it be far better if BiaB moved forward and away from this old Dos limitations? As they DID years ago with the 8 letters limitation in FILENAMES? I mean, the FREE VanBasco player DOES NOT have this limitation... Haven't checked with other music software yet, so I can't tell... smile

Stylenames = 8.3 also as far as the actual file name is concerned.

It would be nice if, when we make our own customized styles, be able to actually name them something like "Big Band with Nashville Brushes.sty" at the file name level instead of say, "_BBWNVB" (Big Band With Nashville Brushes).

Every time time I make my own style up I automatically reach for a floppy disk to save it on.

Leo it is kind of hard to compare BiaB to Van Basco since it does like 40,000 more things and is far more complex. Still You da thunk .midi would work, but most midis I have used were .mid or .kar

Seems like a lot of the issues like 4 letter file suffixes aren't really a major problem. there's lots that BIAB does right!

To me being in a marching band is more fun than watching one ... but I enjoy both! I've gone to football games just to watch marching bands I've heard good reports about.
