Thanks, Torrey, Jim, FMM and Dave. This musical passion has turned me into something of a music history buff, specializing in Hymns of the 2nd Great Awakening, conveniently PD.
This one, Charles Albert Tindley's "We'll Understand it Better By and By," came a little later, 1920, but qualifies in my mind. Born in 1851, he was active as early as 1870. It is joined by Thomas A Dorsey's "Precious Lord" and the unattributed "Closer Walk with Thee" as three powerful contributions from the African American Church. Dorsey (1883-1989,) is associated with Chicago, Tindley with Philadelphia. Negro Spirituals, as called, were transformed into that easy- on-the-ears back beat swing we associate with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band -- New Orleans jazz.
