First: I was having trouble getting the program to open from the desktop shortcuts. All it was doing was displaying the BIAB big logo, but no amount of waiting opened the program.

Second: I went to the Audiophile HDD and opened the prgram (bb64.exe) from there. It opened and I went to work. All functions seemed normal, it even appeared to be saving my .sgu to my default folder.

Third: I stepped away, and when I returned the program had reverted to (or shut down to) just the big logo. Task manager verified the program was running.

Fourth: I searched my folder (then my entire computer) for the .sgu file I assumed I had created, but it doesn't exist.

Fifth: Now no shortcut opens the program in either 32 or 64 bit from any shortcut I have tried.

A good two and a half hours of work seems to have disappeared, and (much worse) I've lost access to the program.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am willing (if need be) to uninstall and reinstall from the HDD, but I'm reluctant to mess with it for fear some important file may be corrupt.

Hi Tangma

The first thing to try is simply reload BB no need to uninstall

The program will install over the top of existing version but your work should then still be there

Hi

Just a shot in the dark re your lost sgu file
I am not an audiophile user but as you say you were running direct from that drive is it possible that the sgu has been saved on that drive .

Tangmo,

As I read through your post, a few thoughts occurred to me.

1. This sounds like it might be related to antivirus software. Do you have Norton by any chance?

Try excluding \bb\ and \Realband\ from being scanned by the AV software. It might help.

2. If it turns out that you cannot get BIAB to run... in the \bb\Preferences folder there are two files that contain user settings. By renaming these it forces BIAB to create new one. The files are INTRFACE.BBW and MySetup.DK -- I suggest renaming them to INTRFACE.BBW.OLD and MySetup.DK.OLD as this makes it possible to get them back if needed.

BIAB usually runs after this. It will be necessary to reset your Audio and MIDI setup. (If you save your configuration before exiting BIAB (under the "Options" menu), then you can simply reload it if you want to.

3. Check your audio driver. When it comes to trying to isolate problems, I always set my audio driver ("Audio | Audio Drivers/Settings...") to MME. This is a very friendly driver with BIAB. Some ASIO drivers can create issues. WAS also can have issues sometimes.

4. Are you running any special VSTs or DXis?

Regards,
Noel

Ok...
Got an idea how to try to find your song file. I tested, it worked for my recently saved BIAB files.
Assuming you have Windows 10.

1)Click Windows logo + E (explorer window will open)
2)Just scroll DOWN, you will see "RECENT FILES" list on main page.
3)See if your file(s) is there.

I can see my files that I saved in BIAB recently...

Good luck.

I concur with Noel. But if you are NOT running an anti malware program, get one and check your system. Malwarebytes Pro or (and) Super AntiSpyware will find any bugs.

In addition to Matt's excellent advise if you don't have an anti-virus or if everything else you have tried and they all failed then you may have a virus. In either case I would add the following to Matt's advice:

1- run the free cCleaner: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner

This will clean out all of the junk that is not needed any more. Be sure to just run the cleaner section, that comes up first, and not the registry cleaner section.

2- run the free Rootkill:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

This will delete any root viruses.

3- run the free ADW cleaner:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

For some strange reason this will find things that their anti-malware program doesn't find.

4- run an anti-virus. Note that the free MS anti-virus Defender/Security is a good one and it comes with Windows.

5- run an anti-spyware program. I use Malwarebytes Pro. They have a free version also.

Then keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware running at all times. These are always running on my Internet computer and only turned off when my music computer is off-line and I am recording and/or working on a song.

If you already knew this then sorry for the redundancy.

Hello,

Could you open your bb folder and confirm which build of 2019 you have there by right-clicking|properties on bbw.exe. Does the program open if you put the file safemode.txt in the bb->Preferences folder?

2019.0.0.644 is the file and product version. I son't know anything about a safemode.txt file.

I have anti-virus software and will do some work with it today. Thanks, all.

This is something you could create, as a debugging step. An empty text file with that name would do.

OK. I did that, and the program opened (ran as admin). It threw up some warnings, but I couldn't catch them in time. Still seemed to operate fairly normally, but I didn't push it too hard.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to call this issue 'unresolved'. Aside from some other more minor problems, I can't get BIAB to permanently recognize the RT and RD folders. I can set alternative folders (the correct ones), but I can't seem to make those changes stick. It may be a function of running in "safe mode", but removing that file reverts all to the inability of the program to open from the shortcuts.

Would DLing and running the previous update do anything? I am not 100% sure when this started--whether it was after the newest build patch or before. It's just a thought in desperation.

Hi Tangmo,

There have been a couple of instances over the years where an update has created and issue for me. So it's worth a shot to download and install the previous update. The older version will overwrite the new. There will be a warning message just to let you know that this is happening.

Also, when I'm sometimes looking at people's problems, I load the update that they have to see if I can replicate it.

Regards,
Noel

Tangmo, sorry bump in to your thread.
Noel said something, I thought I would ask my question here instead of opening another thread. Maybe it will help you to troubleshoot too, depending if this was done previously...

Noel, if you are reading this. Can you please answer to the best of your knowledge? I had some issues too with 2020 smile I am wondering, if I revert to 2019, will it recognize all new 2020 RT's or the 2020 has some sort of database that new RT's can't live without?

Thank you,
Misha.

Misha,

When I went to the below link...

https://www.pgmusic.com/realtracks.all.php?os=win

...at the top of the new sets of RTs it says that BIAB 2020 is required for the latest RTs.

Regards,
Noel

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
