Hi all,

I work in a school and have lots of report writing to do - hate it, but it goes with the territory.

If you also have work that takes lots of concentration - do you have music that works well to help you stay calm and focused ? For me, it really has to mostly be instrumental music. I've found that the "Winter's Solstice" series from Windham hill has just the right tempo and repetitiveness. Also Kitaro's music. Yeah - the "New Age" music is quite old by now...not sure if it's evolved or if anything has replaced it - let me know if you have found anything in that area. As far a classic rock groups go - Pink Floyd can work for me if it's low enough, and also Iron and Wine.

I've often heard that classical music can be good in this area - but I've found much of it too intense or thought-grabbing - I don't know particular composers and pieces - but if you can share particulars, I'd be very interested.

Thanks in advance for sharing.

For purely listening pleasure and concentration, you might be surprised to learn that I listen to André Rieu orchestral music. I find it very relaxing.

Since I work on music most of the time, it’s relaxing not to have background music.

I’ve had many people tell me they play my CD when doing the vacuuming. I have no idea why.

Matt,

I'm having great difficulty imagining ANY brass instrument being described as soothing or relaxing but your playing comes nearest in both cases. I enjoy listening to you play on your Pandora Station so if I ever have the pleasure of meeting you in person please remind me that I nearly owe you a half a penny.

Music is my job, so there is no background music at work, but foreground music.

I can't listen to background music, no matter how soft, or what genre, it grabs my attention. It all wants to be foreground music.

Music is not my job but exactly like Notes all music wants to be in the foreground. I have to have dead silence when doing critical work and I never listen to music while using power tools.

For this type of setting, I've listened to Masabumi Kikuchi's Susto many many times
Gumbo from this album is especially fascinatingly stimulating in the background
/that was a weird combination of words, but fits
//weird combination of words is much like this weird combination of music

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hard core desk work - no music just silence, but for stupid work which just needs to be done I find that my mind finds a sweet spot with

1) Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
2) Vendon Fleece - Van Morrison

Must be hard coded in some memory spot in my brain for comfort and relaxation.

I'll often tune in to old time blues, acoustic blues, pre WW11 blues on accuradio.com
