I am new to Band-in-a Box. I recently purchased Band-in-a-Box Pro with RealBand. I started playing around with the new Equalize Tempos feature with an older song I recorded without a click track. It worked great except for a couple of things.

First, it would only allow me to import 1 wav file. If I tried to add a second, it prompted me to save the current file and created a new project. I was hoping to import the tracks individually from Cakewalk and fix them all in one fell swoop. Is there a way around this?

Second, there are parts of the song I wish to remain rubato. I have others that have tempo changes in them. Is there a way to designate certain bars to remain unaffected when you equalize tempos? Also is there a way to change tempo for certain sections of a song (i.e. set multiple tempos within the same project)?

Thanks.

1. No. If you combine several different songs in Cakewalk into a single file and import that audio file into BIAB, the BIAB Equalize Function will average the combined songs as a single song and not be accurate for any of the combined songs. BIAB only works with a single WAV file at a time.

2. Yes. There may be other methods but I would approach tempo changes in the following manner.

. Complete the tempo equalization on the audio track first.

. You can change the tempo of a single bar or section of bars from the Bar Settings Menu (F5) in the upper section of the page. Open the Bar Settings Menu Page at the first bar you want the tempo to change. If that is the only bar, proceed to the next bar and reset the tempo to the normal tempo. If you want the tempo different for several bars, proceed to the bar after the last bar you want at this current tempo, and reset the tempo back to the normal song tempo. This can be done throughout the total song.

Hi Charlie. Thanks for the response.

1. Sorry if I was not clear. I wanted to export all the tracks in one song to individual tracks rather mixing them all down to a single wav file, not combine tracks from several different Cakewalk projects into one. But since I am unable to do that and bring them all into one BIAB project, what if I got all the tracks except the drums from one project mixed into a single wav file (after I had gotten all my levels and plug-ins exactly the way I wanted, of course), then bring that single wav (of combined tracks from a single project) file into Band-in-a-Box, correct the tempo, then bring it back into Cakewalk where I can add new drum tracks (or I could add the drums right in BIAB). Would that work?

2. Thanks! I will try that.

Once you have it tempo mapped you can generate up a midi track and drag that into Reaper it will get the tempo map from the midi.
Now drag all your tracks into Reaper and run this script after selecting all the bars that you want a constant tempo
right click Save Link/Target As
ReaTrak set tempo mapped items in selection to constant tempo.lua

" I wanted to export all the tracks in one song to individual tracks..."

_______

I misunderstood. You can import up to seven of a song's individual audio tracks into one BIAB project. There may be a few caveats that change the number of audio files to place in the Mixer as your project progresses.

. RealTracks, imported audio files, Midi or SuperMidi tracks and Performance Tracks can be mixed without issue.

. To use the Equalize Tempo feature, each song track will have to individually be equalized once it's imported into BIAB.

. If the imported tracks have different tempo's, the BIAB 'song' will not be in sync between the tracks unless the Equalizer Tempo sets them all the same.

. This works because although there's only one Audio Track, it can be used over and over again in a project.

. You are not limited to just seven tracks. If the song you want to import has 48 different tracks, there's a technique that provides the opportunity to continue to import audio tracks into the BIAB Project. You mix each batch of seven Mixer Channels and export as a WAV file and import that rendered audio WAV file back into the BIAB Audio Track as a bounced sub-mix which gives the opportunity of nearly an unlimited total number of tracks.

. To use the Audio Track again after it's been populated with audio, from the Audio Button at the top of the main screen, in the drop down menu and near the bottom of the list, select Move Audio to a Performance Track... You will be prompted to select another Mixer Channel to place the Performance Track on. The track you select will no longer function as a normal Mixer Channel and will contain the audio from the Audio Track. All seven Mixer Channels can be used to hold Performance Tracks. Once an audio file has been converted to a Performance Track and moved, the Audio Track is available to import and hold another audio clip. The Performance Track will not be available unless the Performance Track is removed.

. My point is the imported different song's tracks will become a mashup of one song merged together in the BIAB song (project) the same as with a DAW.

. I've also used this feature to import various audio clips to be placed in various bars of a single track in a BIAB project. It's been a while, but in the past I've used a combination of placing short multiple audio clips at various bars onto the Audio Track. For instance, place a two bar audio clip at bar 5, another at bar 12, another at bar 20 and so on. Normally after composing the track with multiple audio clips, I convert that audio track to a Performance Track and move it to another Mixer Channel. I haven't done that in a while and seem to recall at one time, there was an issue with dropping multiple audio tracks onto the Audio Track. You will need to test it. It's a very powerful and useful feature to me especially when I'm composing and experimenting. It's very fast in comparison to opening a DAW or RealBand and moving back and forth importing/exporting clips between the programs.

. Mixing and rendering these Performance Tracks and then importing them back on the Audio Track allows me to build a BIAB project of dozens of tracks onto the 7 available Mixer Channels.

______

An additional point from me:

I gave the answer in my previous comment as a response to your specific and direct question. However, since you have RealBand, I should point out that RealBand does a more straightforward, easier and faster job of creating a click track for a song recorded without one and is more the preferred method and also the recommended solution to tempo mapping issues than the method I detailed above.

_____

And...

"what if I got all the tracks except the drums from one project mixed into a single wav file (after I had gotten all my levels and plug-ins exactly the way I wanted, of course), then bring that single wav (of combined tracks from a single project) file into Band-in-a-Box, correct the tempo, then bring it back into Cakewalk where I can add new drum tracks (or I could add the drums right in BIAB). Would that work?"

You can add additional drum tracks, RealTracks, Midi Tracks, Supermidi Tracks, Real or Midi Styles and live recorded tracks or imported audio in the RealBand session.

Hi

On the OP:s second issue: I've posted this request, i.e. equalizing sections, in the Wish list section sometime ago. In the best of worlds it might catch some attention.

Also regarding the suggestions about the F5 bar tempo editing: please keep in mind that the equalization actually stretches/compresses the audio in time, so the F5 method will not do the trick in this case.

I haven't tried it yet, but if it's possible to open more than one instance of BIAB with the same audio track within e.g Cakewalk, then you could equalize each instance with a different tempo and combine the appropiate parts into a new audio track.

cheers
Thomas

Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
