Actually, Adobe Audition makes it very easy to do all that stuff. Or more simply, I'm just really familiar with Adobe. I used a slow fade-in on the strings; everything else just comes in where I want, thanks to an ability to mute all the stuff up to where I want (and still leave it all intact in case I change my mind).
