That brought back many memories. I programmed a few games for the Bally Arcade Game news letter and a golf game for the Atari but when I found out what those MIDI ports were on the Atari my programming days were over! (I did write macros for my job up until I retired but that is a different story.)
This was a very interesting read.

Both the Atari ST and Commodore 64 rightfully belong in the personal computer and music hardware (if there is such a thing) hall of fame.

An excellent article. Lots of nostalgia involved also. I had the original Notator software on an Atari 1040 ST. We worked out how to increase the available RAM. It had the ability to map more than the physical memory that was included, and I remembering soldering additional memory chips on top of the existing ones and getting the addressing right. Lots or wire-wrap leads going everywhere. We ultimately doubled the addressable RAM. Super-machine!

I Bought a dedicated Yamaha computer, the CXM5 (from memory). I don't think I ever used it much and they dropped it fairly quickly. It use the MSX operating system which was meant to be the next big thing. https://element1s.wordpress.com/2017/11/07/human-error-and-step-time-computer-music/
