A man past his best before date, a younger woman: file under Ambiguous Love Song.
Listening now I realise there`s an oldster mistake in the lyrics ( a line which, as sung, means the opposite of the intended meaning).
A full refund if you spot it!

Lost Cause

forever fixing broken things
she came upon a pair of wings
with blue sky scraps
stronger faith than facts
to offer to the world

last year`s man shuffles to the bell
doesn`t want what they have to sell
each breath inhaled
tips his scales
before the fall there was a girl

with her foot in the door
she left him wanting more
a feather for a lost cause

feels good to let go his cane
on the back of her Honda Hurricane
her waist is cut
like the key to his lock
holding tight into the blur

cross the counter in the Dairy Queen
she wants to know how he`s been
you`ve seen enough
mirror says as much
to make believe in pure

with her foot in the door
she leaves him wanting more
a feather for a lost cause

he has the watch she has time
will you find a design
the ways of mercy applaud

with her foot in the door
she leaves him wanting more
a feather for a lost cause

More great lyrics, my favorite verse is the one about the motorbike. I'm guessing the oldster thing is 'before the fall' but I'm not putting any money on it. I always look forward eagerly to your work here on the forum.

Excellent lyrics and vocal! The guitar and percussion set the tone for this song perfectly. Great mix also.

I tried to find your oldster mistake but it was a lost cause whistle

A good narrative and a lovely backing.
The little motif played by the horns (?) sounds synthetic though.
I was hoping there'd be another of your robust vocals but the theme isn't quite for it.

Very good, Robert!

Nice vocals, especially when you bring in the harmonies. I like the track too, Congas are very effective.

I listened closely while reading the lyrics but didn't spot the oldster mistake, so no refund for me! wink

Wow, Robert. Great lyric and vocal to a song that takes the listener away. And, if they're lucky, they learn something about themselves when they get there. Well done!

Robert,

I really liked this!

Excellent lyric. Nice melody. A story well told...

So many good lines:

"forever fixing broken things
she came upon a pair of wings
with blue sky scraps..."

"her waist cut
like the key to his lock..."

"you`ve seen enough
mirror says as much..."

"he has the watch she has time..."

...to mention a few.

Cool backing (had a similar thought to ray on the horns...)

Thanks RayC,
Soon the Scott/Robert songs will be on their own site so you`ll know when to expect a rockier vocal.
This is my first try at using horns- couldn`t find a solo that wasn`t taking over the song & even this ensemble track seemed unwilling to play some chords without devolving into what sounded like a synth flute.
If anyone has a suggestion for a better background horns RT, please pass it on.

Very impressive. Thought the bass sounded really nice, well sung and composed.

As usual a strong lyric.

Nicely done.

Very good melody, great lyrics and excellent instrumentation and arrangement. You've really captured a mood with the song, that fits perfectly with the lyrics - that's not easy. Well done!

Dave,
I appreciate your approval of vocals and harmonies- thank you!
Looks like no winners on the lyric question, so to explain:

you`ve seen enough
mirror says as much
to make believe in pure

sounds like his years of experience have made him trusting when he`s more of a suspicious old guy!
Oh well, I did say Ambiguous Love Song, so I`ll leave it.

Robert, this is an awesome song. LOVE the guitars in the right & left hand. Wonderful lyrics, and the minor key really sets it off. Try using strings rather than the horns ? I find midi strings are still more superior to the biab own RT strings. No idea what synths you have at your disposal but personally I can see past reason, such a vast array of choirs & strings at your disposal there, anyway great song and oh as the others have said, the congo drums were an inspired choice !

Hi Robert,

Your song is sweet and subdued. Your singing is at the same time intense and subtle. It feels as an acceptance of the lost cause. Very well done! The horns fit very nice in the song. I hadn't expected that, because horns are so expressive. They could easily spoil the mood of the song. At least in my opinion of course.

At first glance/hearing I thought you were out of tune when singing: "with her foot in the door...etc", then I heard it was needed there. But it was an exciting twist. And I remembered you used this kind of singing in more of your beautiful songs.

In my guess of what ambiguity you meant it's the line: "feels good to let go his cane", but it could be your clever written lyrics play tricks with me...

Hans

Really great work here - very well composed and your vocals are tremendous here. It sounds ready for the radio too, and the instrumentation works with your voice perfectly.

Great job and thanks for sharing!

Graham,
My forays into midi have been and are likely to remain minimal. I`m in awe of folks that really know how to produce the kind of string tracks you`re talking about.
I liked the slight departure from my usual ballad style the horns brought to this song, so for now I`ll leave as is.
Thanks for your very kind comments!

Hi Hans,
I liked the bit of humour that "foot in the door" line brings to the song... my Wavestune says I`m acceptable there!
I`m glad my not so clear lyrics got you thinking; thank you for your comments.

Very nice poetic start: "forever fixing broken things
she came upon a pair of wings", sounding like an angel (and later 'a feather for a lost cause'), vivid images like a movie without speaking - small gestures build up the story.
Fretless bass, horn section, congas, excellent choices and excellent use. And I really enjoyed your vocals, fragile yet strong interpretation.

Powerful. As is the entire write.

That fretless bass and the congas add great dimension. Outstanding choice.

Your vocals add just the right amount of melancholy to the production.

The mix is spot on to our ears.

Excellent.
