Could you elaborate a little bit more on your suggestion for problem 1. I'm not sure what you're telling me to do.
Problem 2 - interesting point - I did start using the external usb SB X-FI GO somewhat recently. I'll try reverting back to the internal soundcard to see if it makes a difference. Its an intermittent problem. The OS is XP.
