Here is my version of my original song. You may have heard Russell's version this week. He did a great job. I was listening to different styles so that I could understand the difference between swing and even drums, and ended up getting caught up in doing a different version. This is it. Let me know your honest thoughts. I have some issues with it, but I will save them to see if anyone else has the same issues. Everything is up for discussion - lyrics, production, mixing, etc. Your input on my first song helped me to make tremendous progress and I truly appreciate it, so keep it coming. The only thing I will say is that it sounds a little alt-rock due to the lack of harmonies in the chorus. I couldn't figure out how to do that. It also needs a wee bit of countrification, but I couldn't find anything that worked for me. Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for your feedback. BTW, one question for you - What do you think is the title of the song? What would you ask the DJ to play if you wanted to hear this song? You can get to the song by going here.

I think the faster tempo of your version makes the surprise ending even more surprising, because it leads the listener's expectations down a totally different path. If I hadn't already heard the first version, knowing what was coming, I would have presumed this song to be about a girl who is boy-crazy in a different way. If it is your goal to set an expectation, then reveal an alternative meaning, this version does that for me.

Hi Ricky, I just love this type of music. Very lively and bouncy. Loved how you used very subtle use of echo on certain words. I must admit that the tempo change needs (in my opinion) more work to fit it in to the overall song ( the idea is good) Try doubling or trebling you voice on the chorus. You can just copy a track and time shift/pitch shift to get the effect you want, experiment.  I usually just sing the song about 3 or 4 times and choose the best vocal by mixing and matching individual words, then merging into one final track. Well done This one is very good. P.S. Hi Ricky - Good song, great lyrics and I would have liked to hear more of them but sometimes they get lost in the mix. Could you post them?
I wish Soundclick offered the EQ adjustments of Windows Media Player because I would have liked to have seen what a difference a boost in the 125-500 hz range would have made to the overall sound. IMO I think the mix needs a boost in the lower midrange.
As for song title . . . the one phrase I kept hearing was "Can't Get Enough" - seems to suit the enthusiasm of the love story AND the tempo . . .it could also be coupled well in a line "Lost in love, can't get enough" and inserted in enough places in the song to leave a lasting "hookline".
As for countrification - do you have a fav artist you'd like to hear singing this tune? Listen carefully to his mixes of similar tempoed songs - bet you'll find your answer that way.

Can only be called "Lost In Love", surely!
I agree with George above, this sort of pop song needs double tracking on the lead vox. I'd then sing a harmony (or two) every time the words 'lost in love' occur, to push the hook line home. Bass needs bringing up, I couldn't catch it and this kind of driving pop needs driving bass.

Thanks for the input and kind words.
I was concerned that there might be too much bass so I dropped it way down. I will tweak that.
As for doubling the vocal, I actually have done that but I've lowered the second voice significantly because it sounded robotic otherwise. Am I doing it wrong? Do I need more of a shift? How much do y'all shift? I couldn't figure out how to time shift so I pasted in the smallest space I could. Maybe it wasn't enough.
Michee - How do you go about mixing and matching words on various tracks? Are you copying and pasting? Mac had mentioned something about envelopes but I couldn't find any info on it.
Pat - Yes, that was the idea. I am glad you got it. Makes me happy. :-)

Hi Ricky,
I go about a vocal track this way (If I was you I would just try a small file for a start - to get the hang of it.)
I sing maybe 3 or four times so I have 3 or four tracks to work with - I find (especially with me) that I don't sing the same every time.
I sing these in BiaB then I save them individually with different names i.e. michee1, michee2 etc ( by renaming the song)
I then import the wav files into a Daw program that allows better editing of wav files (I use MC5 but wish RealBand was easier)
Using the 1st and 2nd tracks, I highlight a word at a time and play/listen to them (I do this with all words - takes a long time but worth it)
I remove any horrible audible breathing noise from the words.
At the same time I listen for the best sounding word that fits with the song.
What I mean by that is, some words sound sweeter/grainier/harder/laid back/ whatever you decide- it's your choice.
Once I have decided on a particular word I then delete the other matching word on the other tracks that I have discarded and so on.
When I am finished I have four tracks with bits of words scattered throughout the song - try it it works.
When I am happy with the song vocals I then merge them into one track on their own.
There I can add any effect that I deem appropriate.
As to doubling the vocals I sometimes try the SlapBack Echo just to hear what sort of effect that has on the vocal then remove it.
Then I take the Vocal Files that I have discarded (remember I have saved them in BiaB) and add them all to the mix and try time shifting/pitch shifting etc...
This is how I do it but I am aware there are other ways to accomplish the same.

Ricky Also, here's an excellent article on double tracking, including how to do it for real and 'fake' (add a digital delay to the vocal at around the same level as the original part, with a delay time of 80-120ms, and then turn the feedback control to minimum so that you get only one repeat.) Ricky, this is very good. I like the faster tempo and the new ending. I really like the subtle use of delay here; that’s brilliant!
I also believe that the bass and vocal needs to come up some.
You might try a little chorus on the vocals to thicken them. Not a lot of chorus, just a tad as you don’t want to hear the chorus effect, just the thickening effect of it. Don’t ask for the settings as I have found out they vary for every singer and song.
Personally I believe this song is too good to put in an artificial harmony. Either sing it or get someone else to sing it. Real harmonies would make it air play ready IMHO.

Ricky. I'm impressed. Good on ya Mate. It all sounds good to me. Nice twist on the rhythm and tempo.
I think the most important thing here is if you're happy with the song. Also if it has a good dance beat to it and it sounds like it does to me.
The song doesn't really sound country here. It's more like pop/rock. Also, I didn't hear any harmony in the tracks. Maybe there isn't any. I just noticed that one of the other members here mentioned about doing the harmony using your own voice. Maybe I just missed the point. Anyway, good on ya. You did just fine.

Thanks to everyone for your help, input and kind words. I have considered the suggestions and made adjustments. Specifically, I added bass, brought the vocal forward more and tweaked the vocal doubling. I can't seem to go any farther on the doubling or it sounds artificial to me.
