Hello,

Just bought BIAB for Mac 2020. How do you add a slur? I have a dotted quarter E note rising to an eighth F note but I need to add a slur.

Thanks.
Chris

From the Help (I only have Windows version though):

The notation symbols are entered from the Notation Event dialog, which is accessed by selecting Notation Symbols in the right-click context menu in the Editable Notation window and then selecting a symbol from the list.

I think that slurs (and other notation symbols) are purely visual, and do not change the melody. When BIAB plays that melody, you will hear two separate notes with no slur.

That’s an important point: Chris, what is important to you, how it looks or how it sounds?

For example, to make it sound like a slur (or, legato), I would right click on the E note in editable notation mode, then lengthen the duration. 120 ticks is a quarter note. So if the F starts on beat three tick 0, I might end the preceding E on beat 2 tick 119.

Others prefer using the piano roll mode to do this kind of editing, as it’s visual and you can see to make the notes almost overlap.

Note: you said ‘rising to F’. What I described will be an E sounding right up to an F. Did you mean you want the pitch to vary between the E and F?

Yes, good pickup Dave. I am presuming that because two separate notes are involved, the slur is to improve readability only. The actual length of the notes will need to be adjusted separately for them to play with proper legato articulation.

If you are playing the melody -piano, guitar etc, then the slur mark is an indication to the performer. The midi output from BIAB must be 'tweaked' as noted by Matt to create a sound that similar. I guess other marks are similar.

Thanks for all the replys and tips. For this instance it is for visual purposes as it's in the melody line. I'm working between Musescore, garageband, and BIAB so I'm trying to figure out which app is best for what I want to do,which is what I'm still trying to figure out (LOL). Still too new with all these music apps.
