Anyone know how to fix this problem? I have 12 gigs of ram, 1 tb hard drive with about 120 gig fee space on internal hard drive, i hook up my BIAB 2020 to the usb and the softawre staggers when trying to record vocals. What do i do to fix this? I am getting a 6 tb internal drive and am going to have it my main drive cloned. Will this fix my problem having a lot of extra space on the main drive. Any computer techies out there that can help me?

The normal guideline for hard drives is to keep 15% free space, and you fall below that. Still, I do not think this is your problem.

My first hunch is to look at ASIO buffers and increase them while recording. But you may not even be using ASIO. We need to know a lot more information about your system if we are to help you.

We also could benefit from elaborating on what you mean by 'staggers'. A sound clip would be great.

Is this a laptop? There are some essential tweaks need if so. If not, then always record to a different drive than your boot drive.

Too many unknowns here; I'm just guessing. Help us out.

What i mean by staggering is this, kind of sounds like a real old records that has lots of static and slows down the music being played. I will try to get some sound byts if possible. The machine is a desktop. Has 12 gigs of ram, hard drive, approximately 128 gigs free on dive c:\ it is a 1 terabyte had drive.

What is your audio interface, i.e. sound card? Are you using the one that came with your laptop? If so then that could be your problem.

Also is anything running in the background? Things like anti-virus, anti-malware, etc will cause problems. When I'm recording I turn off everything that is not needed, including my Ethernet card.

That definitely sounds to me to be a buffering problem. If you are using an ASIO interface, do try to increase the buffer size. Alternatively, switch to WAS as the audio interface and see if that changes the situation (better or worse), at least that might give some direction as to where to look.

Very helful i will try this. I usually have my eathernet going at the same time. I have antivirus software going all the time and sometimes I'm logged onto the internet. I'm using a desktop. I am using the soundcard that came with the computer.

My little tidbit is this. When I got into this years ago I could not afford a dedicated computer for recording. My system had to double as a home computer and multitask. Well here I am almost 20 years later and still using one old laptop to do everything. I had a dedicated laptop but, my everyday system died. So the point is I have rock solid performance recording, playback, etc. why? The key element is the interface.

When I started I tried to use the built in sound card. While I tweaked and tweaked, it still would breakdown and studder and such. My wife and I were out one day running errands and I walked into a guitar center, and bought a m-audio sound card. Went home installed it and boom a smooth solid recording experience. I never looked back. I spend several years over at the cakewalk forums and every one that joined complaining about audio issues were using the built in sound card. Once they switched to a dedicated card or interface their problems melted away.

Here I am today I use a USB Presonus interface and have it setup up to handle all audio tasks. I never have issues like that.

Literally having a true recording interface either Presonus, or focusrite, or any other name brand (although those two are awesome) will take the fight out of this process. I know they are an expense, but if your going to do this. They are vital.

Something like this will change the game. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AudioBoxUSB96--presonus-audiobox-usb-96

One last note. If you have a 1TB hard drive and only 120 gig is free, you might think of cleaning it up some. Always get off the internet to record, just switch off the WiFi. Stop any background processes that can grab resources. With a PC if you have email it will update while your working. Ever see the little notices float in from the side? Antivirus checking them, etc. I only use Windows defender on my system it runs more “quietly in the background”

I agree with Rob. The included on the mother board audio interfaces are not made for recording purposes. Depending on what your needs are and how much you want to spend you can get a decent one input audio interface for around $50 USD:

Personally I would go with at least two or more inputs inputs as you may want to expand and add more instruments or mics.

We know he has a desktop computer. Next, as Mario asked, we need to know what is used for an audio interface. That's a big part of "we need more info" that I mentioned. Mario is also right about not using motherboard interfaces for serious audio.

Had some occasional issues with USB in a desktop PC; in my case i could only finally resolve this by buying an expensive 4 controller chip Sonnet USB (3.0) card so i could dedicate one controller to my RME audio interface ...

I figured out the problem. My computer had about 10 gig of files on my C drive. I had this problem before but I forgot that it was to many files, all had to do was move the files and it worked fine. I just moved the files to an external 4TB hard drive that I have and now it works fine. I am going to be putting in a 6 Terabyte hard drive and that will take care of the problem. My nephew is going to clone my current had drive to that and my problem should be solved for a long time. I just didn't have enough hard drive space and that was what had caused the problem.

Remember my first thought, about 15% free space? Perhaps that was it after all.

Unless that drive is an SSD, you should run a defrag on it now that you freed up space.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
