My challenge, get BIAB software accompaniment programs to work with my Roland RD300s, an older MIDI version i.e. Midi IN, Midi Out and Midi Thru plugs. I have a Roland UM-One adapter connected to the Roland RD300s and my computer. I am receiving correct accompaniment sounds via the Microsoft GS Waveable Synth computer speakers. I use a Peavy Keyboard Amp for the Roland RD300s as it does not have it's own amplifier. Verifying all connections are correct, the Roland RD300s piano sound from the Peavy Amp is correct. BUT, the accompaniment instrument sounds that I selected, are all PIANO sounds. This happens with all the selections I make and is not limited to a single selection.

Resolving this problem is appreciated. Thanks, mjp88keys@gmail.com

Probably to do with GM (2?) settings either in BIAB or your Roland RD300s.

I don't think this board has a GM mode, meaning you pretty much "can't get there from here"
at least from what I saw in the manual.

You could assign tracks to it one by one .. but it would be a tedious process from what I see in the user manual.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks for your reply. I have been trying to get this to work for years and have not been able to resolve it. BIAB has been very helpful, but hit and miss. Your conclusion is really what I felt down deep, but thought someone out there may have a very different solution. On my club dates I use a Yamaha YPG Digital Piano, it is lighter in weight and does have the simple USB for connecting the computer. he Roland RD300s touch is much better.
I will give your recommendation a try, I wasn't looking forward to inputting the individual instrument sounds as you mentioned time consuming, but I believe that is the only way. Thanks again, I really appreciate your reply.

Since I am a novice in programming, as I noted I use BIAB with a Yamaha Digital Piano that has the simple USB attachment for connecting to a computer. Is there a simple, easy but lengthy process for me to understand to implement the process you have mentioned. I would really appreciate your help. At age 89, I am still club dating and very involved with Microsoft Office Excel Word for preparing budget projections, tax returns and use the computer daily, but the BIAB is very confusing at times and I have avoided major changes to it to prevent any mishaps. THanks again for your reply

just a thought - why do you need to use the Roland? If you are using the Yamaha to play out what do you use the Roland for?

If you want BIAB sounds a simple external soundcard/interface like the Uphoria would give you BIAB sounds and a soft synth like the forte dxi would make midi sound good.

Or if you read the sticky post on cakewalk by Peter Gannon you can get the TTS1 free which actually has Roland sounds.

The touch of the Roland cannot be compared on the Yamaha. I plan on more intense practicing with the BIAB instrumental accompainment and eventually making some recording with BIAB on the Roland. Are you available to assist me in programming the Roland RD300s and advise me of a proposed fee and I would be willing to pay you for your services.

I don't think you need that, this is pretty simple. I'm a gigging keyboard player too and completely understand the difficulty of trying to replicate the touch of a real piano in a digital keyboard. Then having to gig with a smaller, lighter and crappier digital as we get older and can't handle a 50 pound awkward 88 key slab any more.

Before getting into details because there are different ways to do this, tell us how you want to work. Do you gig by running Biab live on a laptop, or do you use prerecorded tracks for example?

Is it the piano sound of the RD300s that you like, or is strictly the touch / action of the keyboard that you like?

Unless I'm mistaken it only has several keyboard sounds (three pianos, electric piano, organ, etc.). You will not be able to play other MIDI parts on it like Drums, guitar, etc.

Therefore, you should not choose the UM-1 as your MIDI output in Band-in-a-Box - you will only be using the MIDI input, i.e. the cable connected from the MIDI out of the Roland.

You could select the Coyote Wavetable DXi synth in Band-in-a-Box (the default). Then, you could either:

1. Send the audio output (not MIDI) of your computer to your amplified speaker system. So MIDI input would still be coming from your Roland, but using the Coyote Wavetable sounds.

I gig live with the Yamaha Digital Piano and the BIAB from my computer using styles and accompainment performing the gig. I would like to have that available to me replacing the Yamaha with the Roland RD300s. Your time is appreciated.

Andrew, thank you very much for your reply. I will give it a try tomorrow as I am away from the Roland at this time.

No need to run a laptop live. Render your backing tracks to MP3's, they can be played back on the gig using your laptop, phone or tablet using any one of many gig managing apps.
