Splitting the bar into two bars as you have done is the best way that I can think of doing what you want.

Did you change the tempo of the 3-beat bar? It needs to be adjusted so that the three beats are played in the same time as two of the 4/4 beats.

If I've got my maths right, this means that the 3-beat bar must be set to a tempo of 1.5 times the 4/4 tempo (i.e. 3/2 x original tempo). The bar following the 3-beat bar will need to be set back to the original tempo.

Example: If your song has a tempo of 110, then the 3-beat needs to be 1.5 x 110 = 165 and the bar following the 3-beat bar needs to be set back to 110.

This will probably work better for MIDI than Realtracks because changing a tempo by this much with Realtracks can often result in audio artifacts that diminish sound quality.
