If this is in the wrong place, could someone move it please.
I received an offer to upgrade to Cubase 10.5 Pro and seriously considered this, but, as I am "a little slow on the uptake sometimes" at 76 years old, I thought why consider further learning I am still struggling with BIAB frown I wondered whether there might be a multitrack recorder which could work with MIDI files and thought "why not ask in the forum?" So here it is then, does such a modern day machine exist with this functionality? I spent most of yesterday hunting around, but got more and more confused. Thanks in advance for any insights. Regards.

Hi Maurice depends what you are trying to do. if your BIAB songs are already complete and you want to add vocals or live instruments the obvious way to do simple recording is to open the song in RealBand which is certainly goood enough for lots of us as a DAW. On the other hand if you want a hardware solution, export your BIAB track as a wav fileto a multitrack recorder.

i'm not a cubase user so don't really know but if your needs ae reasonably simple I would have thought RealBand will be fine - lots of us do use it and don't need anyhting more.

I'm also in the UK so if you want to talk send me a PM

Good Morning Bob and thanks for the quick reply. I have, as yet, not completed my first BIAB song since purchase of 2019 frown I am much happier in MIDI mode rather than with audio files. Midi is, to my mind, easier to work with! Ideally, I should like to construct my music "one track at a time" - or, with BIAB, backing track then add more than one "lead or harmony" track from my Tyros 5. I note that audio is simple with the recorder but things like ensuring "sync" might not be so easy to achieve. The upgrade price for moving to full Cubase is £250 and there are a number of recorders in the 250 - 300 price range and, above all, I'm trying to simplify my musical path so that I *can* enjoy what limited aspects I may be able to use. Thanks also for the PM offer and, who knows, I may actually take you up on that if I continue to be "stuck". Best Regards.

I suggest you may have a better and certainly a much cheaper option by continuing to construct your songs in BIAB. "I should like to construct my music "one track at a time" - or, with BIAB, backing track then add more than one "lead or harmony" track from my Tyros 5." is something BIAB can do. There's no need for moving to any DAW or multi track hardware device unless your recordings become much more complex that what you've stated.

BIAB functions as a Multi Track Recorder and can create very complex arrangements of either MIDI or Audio files or a combination mixture of both types. A BIAB song can be comprised of dozens of MIDI Patch changes, dozens of RealTracks Audio, live audio recorded into BIAB and any combination of these various inputs onto dozens of tracks. Once you learn the steps to do this, you can experiment and audition techniques without any limitations.

You can use your Tyros 5 as an external synth directed by BIAB's chord sheet and BIAB Style and record it.

BIAB can record the output sounds of your Tyros 5 (which you already know)

Audio is simple to record and you only have to learn the one simple trick to "sync" recorded audio to your BIAB song to gain full advantage and use of it.

It seems learning more about BIAB is the simplest and best method you have available to simplify your musical path and allow you to enjoy your music while getting the most from the equipment and software you already have.

BIAB 2026:RB 2026, Latest builds: Dell Optiplex 7040 Desktop; Windows-10-64 bit, Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz CPU and 16 GB Ram Memory.

I wondered whether there might be a multitrack recorder which could work with MIDI files

The best method of working with multitrack midi files if you want to keep them in midi format, is in a daw like Cubase or Sona or Realband etc. or even stay in Biab as Charlie says

A stand alone multi track recorder make multi tracked Audio files.
By recording your instruments and vocal on to separate tracks however the source must be audio and may allow you to import existing audio onto its tracks.

Therefore any thing that is midi will need to be converted to Audio to be imported
You will no longer be able to do midi edits note change etc on the imported track only audio edits an effects

The same is true of any additional tracks you want to bring in from your Tyros
You need to bring in the tyros audio line out or headphones and record it on a track in the multitrack recorder while listening to the existing tracks (be careful to only record the new track)

Once you are done and all tracks sound good you will need to mix down to a stereo pair

Just some food for thought, but only my thinking others may advise otherwise.

Mike

Good Afternoon. Many thanks to both Charlie and Mike. You have both offered a solution which means I must look both longer and harder at BIAB and RB with [maybe] the dreaded DAW. I suspect I am getting too old for this, but I will try both scenarios and see what I get. It was more than 30 years ago that BIAB on Atari served me well - it was all MIDI - and I was successful. Right then, let's go and "bite the bullet" and see if I can end up with music that *I* can listen to with a small dose of pride. Again, my thanks to you both, I am grateful. Regards.

Hi Maurice ,

Since you received an upgrade offer for Cubase 10.5 Pro it appears to me that you already own/use Cubase although you did not specify which version of Cubase you now own or use .

I own/use Cubase LE A1 Elements 10 ( Macintosh version ) . Actually I started using Cubase/Steinberg software more than 40 years ago in the days of " floppy " disks . Their copy rights system then and now is still the best .

It is a great DAW ( multi-tracking audio/video ) although the learning curve is steep . That is not meant to imply you would not be able to learn it .

At this point I am working with the " video " aspects of Cubase .

Also I still find Cubase ( Steinberg products ) are very expensive once you get into it because there are many " add on " Steinberg's software you may end up wanting to buy which means more and more $$$$$ . Also there is the " hardware " you may need to work effectively with Cubase .

Good luck on your choice of multitracking software and of course happy Banding in a Box .

Good Morning W. Thanks for the response. I, too, have Cubase Elements 10 and considered upgrading for a little while. The decision, so far, is to try the solutions offered by the helpful gents above although, whichever way I choose to try, I believe it will be a long time coming smile Regards.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
