"There are a ton of lessons out there so I would advise people to take advantage of them. However it is still the best policy to get a good instructor first. It is easier to learn the right way first then to correct bad habits later."


I did that pretty early on. The guy gave me a list of the books to get and I would always study beforehand. After about the third or fourth lesson, he told me proceed on my own since I already could play what the next lesson was before I got there.

It did teach me to learn to read enough to be dangerous and inspired me to get into music theory. Music theory was much more helpful than learning to read.
