Hi Folks,
I got my new computer and have xp installed as well as 2 copies of windows 7 32 bit. The order I installed was xp first on c, then windows 7 on d and finally windows 7 on e.
Now I want to back up my computer with acronis true image 2010 that I haven't bought yet. Tried an old version of arconis version 8 but it wouldn't work right, and as well as that I am a bit confussed where the boot record is now on my computer, is it on either c d or e drives? as I want to make sure that partiton is definately backed up. There is no system reserved partitom either in disk management. Coming straight to windows 7 from xp makes it seem like a different beast as regards where the boot record is stored to me.
I know there is a backup and recovery utility in windows 7 but I want to be able to use acronis as well.
If anyone could be good enough to explain to me on what partition master boot record is now, i'd very much appreciate it.
thanks very much Joe

Joe, Why do you have two different installs of Windows 7?
The Master Boot Record is on whatever drive the first OS was installed on. Each of the installs, when booted to that particular, will most likely refer to THAT disk as the C drive. What I mean by that is this.
If you have one drive, with three partitions, and XP was loaded first, then the Master Boot Record is on the XP partition.
If you have three different physical drives, then whatever drive had the first OS installed on it will be the Master Boot Record.
ALL OF THIS assumes that you are doing a MultiBoot system, with a start up screen that asks what OS you want to boot into.
The next thing is, if you have three drives and three installs, when you boot into each one of them, the drive or partition that you are booting to will, or at least should be, the 'C drive.' So, technically, you'll have three C drives. What I would do is go into the Driver Properties and rename them, calling one XP Drive, Win 7 One, Win 7 Two, that way as they drive letters switch for each install, you'll know what is what.

Isn't the BIOS set to look at one drive first? Often cable selected? It has to start somewhere.
Asking mostly.. ..or is the OS choice window in ROM?
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

As Gary said, it all depends on what the OP did.
Cable select involves the (old) IDE cable, and the drive on the end of channel 0 is the boot drive IF both IDE drives (limit two per channel) have the jumper in cable select position. This can be overridden by the drive boot order in the BIOS, and/or by setting the jumper on the drive to master or slave, or by a dual-boot configuration.
SATA drives will boot in the order of the SATA ports on the motherboard, starting with port 0, but that can also be overridden in the BIOS.

Bob, To clarify even further, if the computer has four IDE drives, a DVD drive and three hard drives, it is still possible to have the boot drive be any one of the three available hard drives.
My problems a few weeks ago, after trying "God Mode" on a Vista computer was that my Vista install was like on the first partition of the third hard drive, something I forgot about.

Well, here is someone claiming Acronis is working fine for Win 7 MBR backup, part way down the thread. Also says you can DL a free trial.. http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/10903-simplest-way-restore-windows-7-mbr.htmlThe post is a little dated. Read down another couple posts, where he mentions that the cheaper version works in Win 7 but more expensive one doesn't .. just trying to help. None of this tested here.

Thanks for replies everybody. Gary, the reason I use 2 windows 7 installs is an extra security precaution as I only use one of the window 7 for bill paying and online transactions, not general surfing so I figure less chance of catching a virus.
Now back to my original question as regards the master boot. I have an older computer with 2 installs of xp and I know that the MBR is in the C drive. If I go into system properties on that C drive there and select advanced and then startup and recovery, I am shown a list of the installed OS and am able to select one as the Default os to boot into at windows startup.
Not so with the new computer even though xp is installed first in the C drive on it. If I do the above in the xp install I am only presented with the xp option, which has led to my confusion as to what drive the boot loader is actually on. The 2 installs of windows 7 show all the os on the new computer.
Thanks again Joe

Interesting site to read about MBD. http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/mbr/bootini.htmFrom article- What about Windows™ 7 or Vista?
You can not use BOOT.INI with these operating systems! Vista and Windows™ 7 requre the use of a new boot manager ("bootmgr") and other associated files in order to boot. If you try booting these systems using BOOT.INI and NTLDR, the operation will fail. For example, if you install Windows™ 7 in unallocated space on a computer running Win XP and look inside the XP partition, you'll find the install process made backups of the original boot sector (BOOSECT.BAK) and boot.ini (Boot.BAK) files, and these lines added to the new boot.ini file:
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems. ;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.Implies to me the same the MBR for XP is used, as it gets updated when Win 7 gets installed.. Read it and reach your own conclusion though, don't want reponsibility for your backup.
