The panned "evasion evasion" is interesting but it seems to weaken the beginning of the chorus which doesn't recover 1st time through. The 2nd is stronger. It's the same in the Dutch version. I like the loop and the arrangement but perhaps the chorus could use some dynamic change to make it step up.

The Spirit Level - bringing the level higher again.
An excellent production. REALLY interesting sound/BAND. Scott's guitar work fits perfectly.
Good mix.
Haunting lyrics, hauntingly sung.
Very enjoyable.

Ray, I liked the panning of "evasion" - not sure the 1st/2nd repeats are much different; will have another listen. I can hear a dodgy bit of tuning on a chorus word, otherwise it sounds like an improvement of that other version to me( I`m not going to link to it- a collab. that got away from me and went into disco territory). The Spirit Level - bringing the level higher again.

fj Thanks for that, Floyd! Robert

Hello Gentlemen ...
Super cool! Unusual but in the best of ways. So glad the Spirit level felt compelled to pass this on ... a great listen. Excellent worl by both of you. As Floyd said, haunting. But there's nothing wrong with that. It adds an element of surprise and anticipation. Very, very nice!
Best to both of you. Be safe ...
Alan
PS: I forgot to say hyow much I loved the "sweep" at the very end ... yeah, nice!

Hi Robert, Scott and Archer,
I got a bit surprised at the beginning of the song when the tabla entered and your singing began a bit Indian as well> but 'surprised' in the meaning of 'pleasantly', because of that Eastern touch. I like that. The lyrics were a bit too complicated to understand. Even Google translate couldn't help me with it. I suppose it's like listening to Dutch songs ;-)
But, beside that Eastern touch, the chosen tempo of the song worked out very well. Gives a nice amount of tension to the song.
Hans

Hi Robert and Scott, I had a listen the other day but didn't have time to comment. Good stuff guys! Cool lyrics as always, Robert, and Scott always comes up with the perfect part for the song. Good vocal and I like the production too (the "evasion" pan works for me, I liked it) Another strong offering from Spirit Level!

Zappa meets Harrison! Mammon? From medieval to Milton....interesting, as is the entire lyric. Ultimately going with the flow is better than analysis You guys have carved out a forum niche that Janice just referred to as avant garde rock. Way cool with your vocal and guitar melding. The timbre of your voice and Scott's chops/tone really establish and keep the vibe nailed. And we're on the level. J&B

Robert,
A different sound from you out of the gate . . . I like it! An 80’s type sound to this, a Duran, Duran feel tor me. Love that guitar solo; fits in smoothly. Production-wise, I would have preferred a stronger sound on “evasion, evasion” in the chorus—the vocal is a little lost there for me and so the chorus (again for me—it’s all subjective) loses just a touch of momentum. Lyrically poetic—it may be a bit over my head—but it all hangs together really well. Great stuff!
Best regards,
Deej

Peter I`m glad you mentioned Scott`s synth , Peter- its nice to have the different sounds it brings. Thanks for your comments. Hello Gentlemen ...

Hans Hans, Happy to hear my lyrics stumped Google, and that you found the song interesting despite the translation difficulties! I like that bit of Eastern flavour the tablas & bouzouki bring- thanks for noticing that and giving the Spirit Level a listen. Robert

Yeah, you always manage to bring my spirit to a higher level, Robert. I really like how you mixed in all the parts and presented such a wonderful whole. This is a really cool idea for a song. In answer to the question: I'll take the fifth.

Musically this reminds me of Talking Heads and Runrig. I like the rhythm, interesting mood and intriguing melody in the chorus. Scott's playing fits perfectly with the other instruments. Great vocals and mix. Pop feeling with complex lyrics, that's my cup of tea The lyrics do not open to me totally even after many readings, but something spiritual I guess. Nothing to do with your lyrics, but for some reason I recalled a certain message: We apologize for the inconvenience Janne

J&B J&B, Well Spirit Level have quoted Milton before; I`m glad you enjoyed this without overthinking though and I like the term "avant guard"... I translate it as "lookout!" we like to keep surprising you level headed guys. Robert,

Deej Deej, I can hear some 80`s techno pop in this also- Scott`s synth works well for that. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. Hello Mr. RobertKC,
I recently watched a live stream on YouTube where people were discussing why the mini moog still is so popular even if it is almost 50 years old. Most people agreed it is because it just sounds warm in a way that newer synths havn't managed to sound.
I feel the same is true to your voice.. it just sounds really warm, intimate and pleasant in a way that I seldom hear from other singers - it is a joy to listen to your tracks because you have this rare quality.
Really enjoyed your song! Will
