I was playing around this afternoon and two songs came up sequentially in BIAB. The first was "A white Sports Coat" by Marty Robbins, and the second was "What in the World's Come over You" by Jack Scott.
When I got to the middle 8 (Bridge) I found an uncanny resemblance between the two songs.
No, scrub that, they're almost exactly the same.
Look them up on YouTube and make your own mind up.
BTW I did check, and there are two different composers.
(And I don't think I spelt "plagerism" correctly :))
Maybe "plagiarism"

Hi Keith. I'm not going anywhere near that one. There will be some automated web spider running in the background that reads this and reports it, and the legal fraternity will have a field day pulling it apart and wondering how they can get some litigation process going. Yes, spellcheck likes that. Very similar, using the same progression basically, which was popular during that time period in a bunch of songs. Probably different enough, but yes quite similar. I could imagine with Jack Scott's song coming after Marty's that he may have just got their on his own when writing it. But who knows?
My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

Isn't this just normal? There are only so many chord progressions... I-V-vi-IV has been used on at least 1 million tracks across all genres....;)

In the bebop era it was very common for jazz musicians to take the songs they have improvised over, use the same chord progression, write a new chord progression and give it a new name. I wonder if there is a songwriter/producer out there who has written an in depth analysis of what, exactly, constitutes a 15% change. Titles cannot be copywritten, nor can progressions. I used to joke, "If I remove the c, can I count that towards the 15% ?

Trev, I'm sure you remember the flute solo in "Down Under".
Three played notes over two bars. They got sued. Yes, that litigation was disgraceful. And the copyright owner didn't even know about any connection until the question was asked many years later on a quiz show. Then out came the sharks for a feeding frenzy... All for a few short seconds of a flute riff tucked in the middle of the song. I was appalled.

When it comes to the Kookaburra and Men at Work I’m still confused. How could anyone actually see the kiddie song in Down Under.
I reckon they got ripped off. But that is just my opinion. I also feel that sort of thing actually does more damage to music in general than it does to protect artists rights.

I reckon it was a set up. Hi Keith The coincidence was first raised in the music quiz show 'Spicks and Specks' 10 years after they bought the rights - (10 years, hello?) the purchasers found out that they had an opportunity to go on a feeding frenzy. Flutist Greg Ham who played the little riff, eventually took his own life. so sad
