Each time you generate the song, BiaB will produce a specific arrangement based on the tracks it assembles that make up the song.
If you like a specific arrangement, you can freeze the track(s) to keep that particular presentation.
The small asterisks on the Mixer change to blue when the track is frozen.

One caveat to freezing an arrangement is to make sure you've first got the chord grid where you want it. That includes rests, hits, shots, and pushes. Because once frozen, it's frozen. Changes made after freezing don't take, and if you unfreeze, you'll get a new arrangement again.

Those are not small asterisks. They are tiny, little snowflakes.
It may also help to know that you can freeze selected tracks that you like and may be able to tweak the chord sheet and have regeneration affect the unfrozen. Example: I'm not overly sensitive about drums, and the rhythm guitar is simple, but may like a solo part. Freeze the solo and let other tracks regenerate to a tweaked chord sheet. AYOR, of course.

You can freeze individual tracks, but not bars/sections within the track. This would be an excellent feature though.

Further to previous reply, you can just generate a specific section of a track using RealBand (Band-in-A-Box's partner program for Windows).

Another benefit of freezing tracks is speed, time saving. Example; I can freeze all the tracks while searching for a good super midi track. This way when I regenerate it goes really fast ' cause it only regenerates the unfrozen tracks. Or I freeze all but drums until I get a usable drum track then freeze the drums and export. Also, when fishing through styles for only piano and drum Real Tracks I freeze everything else so I don't have to wait while it generates tracks I'm not going to use.
