If you are using a sequencer you can save the real track as a wav file. This is very easy now, i.e. Thank you Peter for implementing that suggestion!

Many times I will save multiple variations of a real track solo then cut and paste in my sequencer to get what I want.

I do like your suggestion though. Freezing tracks and/or parts of tracks has been suggested many times.
