Yeah, if you can get Win7 for that machine you may be much happier. I know I like it.
I have about 50 8mm reels that my parents took as I was growing up that I have to get to DVD; a little trickier than VHS since none of the 8mm projectors I know of have a video out jack.

So it's time to set up the screen and get the digvid camera out. At least they'll be digitized. I did my grandmothers 8mm tapes last winter and they turned out pretty good. It takes a little tinkering with the camera settings to avoid the dreaded flicker of the frame speeds. Deterioration was so bad that the gear was shredding the holes in a few of the tapes as they played, but I did get one final play out of them. Lost one tape out of abut 80 due to the condition of it. They had sat for about 20 years since last being played.
I really enjoyed it. One tape had a guy walking by in the background with a block of ice carried with those huge tongs.. there was some interesting and historical stuff in there, including a tornado that hit this area in the 50's I believe. Grandpa was a boy scout leader and there were some of the big national jamboree campouts in there too. No sound to deal with on those older films.
Good luck with your project.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
