Does anybody control their BIAB running on a PC with an external MIDI controller (Keypad, iPad, iPhone, etc.) ?
I am NOT talking about using the BIAB App for iPad. It has terrible reviews !
I am talking about one of those iPad apps that lets you customize a user interface control surface to control the BIAB on the PC. Basically I am just interested in transport controls and changing songs. Lemur and TouchOSC are examples of Apps that let you design such control surfaces and communicate their controls to a PC. I'm just not sure how easy it is to hook the incoming MIDI commands from the remote device to the BIAB controls.
Another alternative is using a 64 pad MIDI keypad (like Akai or Novation's Launchpad) with a USB cable to the PC laptop.

Bob, I've had some limited success using an iPad Mini 4 as a MIDI controller for BIAB for Windows. In my case, I installed a program called rtpMIDI which provides MIDI communication over a network connection. It worked but it took a bit of tweaking to figure out how to get it configured properly. I also had to install a couple apps on the iPad to allow it to send MIDI commands to the PC. There were big downsides to both, namely: (1) High latency sending MIDI over WiFi - it was bit too high for my needs. (2) The apps on the iPad caused some instability and would not always function 100% reliably. (3) There was no touch sensitivity in any of the apps that I found (reasonably priced ones). (4) I did manage to find an application that allowed me to use GarageBand iOS and send output from there to the PC and BIAB, but it caused some odd behavior in GarageBand where it would cause a delay of 30 seconds up to 5 minutes to open a song. It finally went away after a while. rtpMIDI https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/rtpmidi.htmlI understand that it should be possible to use the iPad USB Camera adapter to connect to the PC directly instead of using the network, and I have it but I never got around to hooking it up. There is apparently a MIDI over Bluetooth option within GarageBand for iOS which you could use if you had a MIDI input on the PC that would accept bluetooth, but I was not able to find any current hardware that would support it for the PC. If you'd like more details about my partially working setup, let me know. I'd be very interested to hear of anyone else who successfully used an iPad of some sort to control BIAB. I might give it a try again some time just for kicks or just to have a secondary MIDI controller.

MANY thanks Ed for taking the time to respond !
I really want to find something that is 100% bullet proof, as I can't afford glitches at a gig. Actually you got me re-thinking that for openers my iPad-Laptop connection, if that's the way I go, must not rely on WIFI but rather be hard wired or, less desirably, bluetooth. Places where I play may not even <HAVE> WIFI.
Due to my need for reliability, I am now also even re-thinking using BIAB live. I am more leaning towards getting backing tracks made in BIAB, then creating MP3 from it and running them on a reliable MP3 player with BIGGER transport buttons on my iPad or laptop. Pausing for bass or other solos and then resuming.
Actually I have used rtpMIDI with success in connecting RiBN app from my phone just for faders on the iPhone. But no real practical use- I was just playing- as in a gig I think all my levels will already be pre-set.
Hope this thread spurs some additional input to the use of BIAB in real time gigging, as it would be nice rather than playing with a canned set of MP3 backing tracks...
Best,
Bob

The discontinued Frontier Design Tranzport was the only control surface BIAB supported, to my knowledge. I would love a simple transport app, such as the one for Mixcraft.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Slate VSX, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.
