hi all
Thought some of you may like this free VSTI if you like vintage synths.

Even in its hardware form, 1988's Kawai K1 - often viewed as decidedly low-budget alternative to Roland’s all-conquering D-50 - was more ROMpler than full-on synth, being a collection of multisampled instruments with relatively few hands-on editing options. So, it stands to reason that a software plugin version should be pretty authentic.
Nils Schneider’s K1v is precisely that, and the good news is that you can download it for free.
This promises to accurately emulate the K1’s 8-bit synthesis engine and parameters, and includes 768 presets (that’s the factory bank and all the ROM cards). You can import and export SysEx presets and banks to/from the original keyboard, and you can also use the K1v as a software editor for said hardware.
As things stand, K1v only runs on Windows as a VST2 plugin, but Mac and Linux support is said to be coming.
You can download K1v for free from the Nils Schneider website;

be sure to support the developer by donating if you like it.

have fun
Mike

Very cool! smile

The K1 was my first synth, and definitely had low-resolution sounds. It was basically a poor musician's version of a D50.

The synthesis algorithm allowed stacking multiple simple waveforms, and had a lookup table filled with sampled transient attacks from different instruments.

The synthesis method took advantage of the fact that the initial attack of the instrument was the defining characteristic of the sound.

That is, if you had a generic sustained tone and stuck a piano attack to the beginning of the sound, you'd hear a piano, while if you took the same sustained tone and put a violin attack in the front, you'd hear a solo violin.

Since I mainly played the keyboard at church, the main sounds I ended up playing were pad strings and the electric piano. But it was the fat Jan Hammer styled synth pads where the keyboard really excelled - the "Ahhh" was as close to a Fairlight as I was going to get.

I eventually sold my piano and got a Proteus 2, using the K1 as a master keyboard controller. But I had a number of occasions when the Proteus would occasional start playing gibberish, and the K1 sending spurious MIDI commands was most likely the culprit. Since money was tight and I couldn't afford another controller, the Proteus had to go. frown

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi David
Pleased you found it of interest .
You will be pleased to know that the one voice that does work in Biab is Ahhs , this is the first voice.
Although you can select the other patches in Biabplug in screen and in the plugin in itself, as soon as you press play in Biab it reverts to Ahhs. I am looking into it.
Must say it works well in Cakewalk by Band lab, as long of course as you use the 64 bit dll.

Cracked it see later post below.

Mike, thanx so much for this!

I still have a Kawai K1M. It is the table top version of the K1. I haven't used it in years but I still have it. Don't ask why.

I'm looking forward to playing with this VSTi.

Hi all smile
Well found a way to load the other patches.
By default you get the first one Ahhs as I said.
Once the file is playing you can then select another voice It does not mater if you do this from the biab selector or the one in the plugins gui either one updates both.
Stop the song. while playing the new voice.
You now have 2 choices you can save the song as newname, next time you call it up
it will have whatever voice was active when saved.

Better still you can name, and save the bank this writes a .fxb file to the plugin’s folder that you can recall at any time with the load bank option.
