That's what Andrew suggested; the Recording button drop down.
In jford's image the bottom checkbox is what Andrew mentioned (always record audio and MIDI).

FWIW this setting is also available in the Audio Prefs area (under Options).
It's the bottom arrow in the below image. Once unchecked, PT only records whatever the target track type dictates by simply hitting record.
However, you may accidentally not record anything if you think you are recording audio, but the track type is MIDI (and vice versa). There is also a setting to determine what the default track type is. If you record audio tracks a lot, set it to audio, and the same for MIDI.
There are times when recording both is desired, and to be honest it is the best 'fail safe' option so you don't lose a take (likely why it is the default setting). But the options are there.
