I know, I know, RealTracks are far superior to any midi patch in terms of finished audio. However I have some really nice chord progressions created in my BIAB using RealTracks and I would like the midi to use with Symphony in Ableton. There wasn't anything of string quartet styles for midi available. It is probably that I don't fully appreciate the technology behind RealTracks that I ask this question.
The RealTrack is Audio produced by a real performer and I thought I might be able to change the RealTrack violin patch for a midi violin. In fact the option to do just that is available. But, when I tried this I selected a midi violin patch but this did not change the patch in my style.
I did drag the violin track to the 'Drag and Drop' midi section, even though it is audio, and this did convert to midi but I'm really sure that outcome in Ableton was anywhere near what was produced with the RealTrack.
Yes you can do that as you say, but all you are getting for the midi is the notes from the transcription of the realtrack. These are just that, what note, note length it will contain none of the playing expression of the audio, as it is not really converting the audio to midi just the transcribed note that some on has done based on what was being played. Therefore the midi can’t sound as good. If you see what I mean. Mike
Yes I do so what you mean Mike. I felt that this really was the case when submitted the question. The ability to have the basic note itself would be useful though because it is helpful to me to have a midi chord generator and then add my own expression to that in the orchestral instruments in Ableton.
I still do fully understand whey BIAB offers to allow me to change a RealTrack to midi but doesn't actually do it for me. It still carry on with the original RealTrack!
As mentioned, the MIDI note transcription will not always carry the inflections/articulations of the original performance. This depends on the instrument that was used. MIDI from some keyboard performances are very faithful.
Melodyne might give a better result.

There are a few String Quartets available as MIDI SuperTracks, e.g. #2522. SuperTracks are similar to RealTracks in that they are done by studio musicians, but they are MIDI recordings not audio.
