I have bb 2010 on an external hard drive. It has been fine until tonight and I now get a message access violation in BB module exe when I try to load a song I have entered.

How do I correct this?

Hello Brian. Can you tell us, are you able to load any other songs? Or is it just this one that gives you the error?

Two standard things to do here are, first, reboot your computer and start again; second, do a Opt., Return to Factory Settings.

If these don't help, could you tell us about your system, particularly which version of BIAB, what OS, and what are you using for MIDI? Using DXi?

I am disappointed to say this but from my experience and from threads on this forum, Access Violation errors seem to be a common problem with Version 2010.

So far, an update to the latest Build seems to solve the problem ... temporarily ... until the next time it occurs.

I have to wonder - did these never come up during testing?

All songs play ok until I open one song which happens to be the last one I was playing with when the trouble began. Then when I open the one song I get the access violation at address....in module bbw.exe message. When I exit that song and go back to a previous song that played fine before opening the problematic song, it wont play either and I get the access violation message. All songs I have entered then become not functioning. So it seems the problem is started by one song which must be corrupted. Restarting the computer doesnt help. I havent yet tried a re-set to factory specs yet. If I just delete the song might that correct the issue? How do I do that?

Im not connected to a keyboard. Im just using it as a standalone programme siiting on top of my piano.

I tried the factory reset and that did not solve the problem either. I cant find the version of the 2010 software. It is left blank on the properties of the BB icon in the Ultra pak. I am using the Vista home premium with service pak 2.

The code on the external hard drive is UP292

Hello Brian,

To find the exact build, go to the Help menu in Band-in-a-Box, and click 'About Band-in-a-Box'. If it is earlier than 294 or 295, download the patch from:

I have the program running on Vista 64 and always get a violation message on closing. And sometimes when trying to load a song, but it goes away and everything works fine. I can take the same hard drive and run in on XP and never have a problem. It's a Vista thing for me.

The only other time I had problems on an external hard drive with this was directly related to the power output of the USB port in question. Some heavy cables solved this, and some computer were fine. (I have 4 computers). Note that the same computers that my blackberry will not charge and throw me an error message about there's not enough voltage to charge it, are the ones that cause me grief with the external hard drive. And that is only some of the ports, there is usually 1 port which is fine and the others are not. Someone posted that if you get an external multi USB port with it's own power supply plug, that that solves a host of problems. My big Vista HP 10 gig 1 terabyte system with HDMI monitor has a usb to the monitor which has 2 more ports and that will not run the hard drive, nor will it charge my Blackberry.

Sometimes on an external hard drive the problems are with the cables and voltage, and again on Vista the operating system seems broken. That's my take. Why can I run the same hard drive on Xp without any problem or error message, when Vista with UAC shut off throws me constant errors. I'm thinking of switching my main system to Windows 7, and would like to know if anyone else is having problems with that?

Of course you could always order the totaleverythingultraplusginormousaudiophilePAK, try it,fail, and send it back. If it works OK on Vista64 then it should work on Windows7. I'm sure it was tested.

I only have 2 problems in Vista, used to be 3 cause I was a moron and installed the VSC Dxi which caused me no end of grief. My bad. Removed it and things are ok now.

Problem 1. Error message on quit. I usually don't ever quit on that computer, it's on the lowest of the 4 levels of my house and I don't shut it off.

Problem 2. Some songs I have in an enormous folder called enourmousfolderofsongs has the odd error message when loading a song. I have not yet figured out the common denominator. Once I decide to use the song, I have a process, kill the Soloist Track. Kill the Audio Track. Turn the melody volume to 1. (Don't ask me why, but the melody I either sing, or play on something.) Next I unfold the thing. Then enter changes at certain bars, try new styles, change some volumes or instruments, tweak all the volumes so they are right with my mixer, and then save the song in a special directory and then save the same song to an external hard drive because I don't want to lose that sucker now.

My problem has resolved. I deleted one song that seemed to start the problem and now everything seems back to normal.

That seems rather extreme. However, I am delighted to learn that what I have been using successfully for nine months does not work.

Well said and what I thought. I'm going to put Windows 7 on the Vista beast soon.

And I'm waiting on the Acer thing that clips to the back of the monitor, looks like a good thing for gigging. Actually the best thing I've seen in a long time. Flat Screen with a wart on the back that has HDMI Usb ports and a hard drive.
