so BIAB seems to work fine on both but you don't like the sound on Windows 10. headsets work fine but plugging into a speaker system gives a flutter. sounds like the speaker setting on the laptop isn't working right or your speakers introduce the noise and the fault is there.

and you haven't tried using the behringer driver and the behringer unit audio output which would cut out the laptop's internal sound totally and if it works give you high quality audio.

Bob, you are misunderstanding me.
I am not using headphones. I am using the same amplifier thoughout all the tests on all computers.

The only difference is that this computer asks every time whether I am plugging in a headset or external speakers. Between choosing 1 or the other, I now get the original bad muffled sound or the flutter. But the physical equipment and connection is always the same.

Before resetting the OS but after Dell made me upgrade the drivers, it did NOT ask what is plugged in and I had the previous noise.

So yes, a circle of sorts but that is what the support has instructed.

I have not installed anything further since because repeating the same experiment over and over and expecting a different result is futile.

I have a huge investment in this and now it looks like I will never be able to use it for it's purpose.

I am totally demotivated and basically out of energy.

EDIT: I just read this on another site:

So far, the 2020 updates to Windows 10 have caused a plethora of sound problems, including audio that just won’t work and third-party app audio that’s too low to use properly.
