Eddie,
Since you used driving for comparison to playing music, I'll continue with it. Some people just want to learn to drive so they can pick up their girlfriend and take her to the movies, ...maybe even get a good night kiss. Others may just want to be able to go to the grocery store and get to their doctors appts. Race car drivers want to go around in circles at mind numbing speeds while risking their lives to do it.
Simple play along programs are great for millions of people to learn some basic skills. It also does something even more important, ...it teaches them music appreciation. Once they realize how hard it is to play and sing a few simple tunes they'll have a much greater appreciation for the music they hear played by professionals.
Any of them who want to advance will do so by studying theory and finding out why certain things sound good while other things suck.
I would never want to discourage anyone who is happy playing "Amazing Grace" to a play along video.

I didn't bother taking the the time to call out Eddie on his individual comments. I had a hard time even getting through the lengthy tirades. He already knows he was denigrating what Joanne is doing. I guess it shouldn't surprise me that some others came to Eddie's defense when he was clearly putting down Joanne's plan to help rank beginners to have the audacity to learn to strum along to a few songs. Where are the people who should be applauding what she's doing while also calling out the elitism of Eddie's comments.

Years ago I took my young sons around age 13 to a really good guitar teacher and he taught them songs they wanted to learn to play. Today, they are both really good guitar players. My oldest son has been in several metal bands in California and now in Sweden. Anyone can pooh poo metal music, but technically it's difficult. My youngest son plays jazz guitar and is a serious musician. During his time playing he's learned to play piano and knows theory. I would say if they hadn't started with songs they would have been totally bored during their early teen years and maybe would not have stayed with music. Maybe for some people a classical style of training works and that's fine, but for a lot of youngun's they just want initially to learn to play the songs of the bands they like.
We are all different in how we learn and what we want to do with music. I think Joanne's idea is great and would benefit many people. There's nothing wrong with people who play and just want to learn songs. I see the same thing in the art world, many professional artists don't think hobbyist artists have any merit or shouldn't be trying to sell their paintings. How many professional artists always made fun of Bob Ross' pretty little trees from his TV series teaching housewives how to paint? Bob probably made more money than the college educated painters.
Also, I can name you many big name musicians would could not read music Jimi Hendrix, Glen Campbell, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Eddie Van Halen, Robert Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Tommy Emmanuel as well as others. A pretty impressive list and these guys made millions, so don't have an attitude about you're a pseudo musician.
But to Eddie's defense and point, for those who can and want to put in the time, money and energy to become top professionals, I appauld them. Not all of us have those resources and maybe that's not what we want to do. But we can still enjoy creating music and that's where BIAB comes in and we all so appreciate that. I'm a pretty good lyricist and feel I am a musician at some level, although I could never play in a big orchestra, nor sing opera, but I don't care to. But maybe Eddie couldn't write lyrics and maybe doesn't care too. We are all different and that's what makes the world go round and we should all appreciate that.

I started playing the guitar when I was about 12, self taught, but haven't picked one up since 2003...roughly. Thank you so much for creating this channel, after a few times going through the video muscle memory took over and with it that old feeling came back. I will most definitely support this channel. WOW!! This is such an interesting thread!! Hot buttons out in force LOL First of all Joanne, I think this is a wonderful idea !!! Full disclosure ... I DO NOT READ MUSIC NOR DO I CARE TO !! I have studied in the past but quickly dropped it. It just wasn't for me. In my view music really comes from the heart. If you can develop a decent ear you hear things that work in a musical context and a lot of times it becomes more interesting. Then it's just a matter of working it out. In my background (RB Bands) there are tons of singers and musicians that I have been associated with that will totally destroy some of the "learned" professionals. And the keyboard players in the churches are just flat out amazing and a lot of them don't know a note on a scale. Now that may be a cultural thing. One thing that a guy told me a long time ago was "Don't write for musicians ... they want to criticize everything you do. Write and perform for the audience" That guy was Phil Collins !! I subscribe totally to that theory. I don't write for musicians. I want them to enjoy what I write but they are not my audience. It's a waste of time. They will always find fault somewhere. LOL Your idea of having a course for people who want to ENJOY music and play a favorite song for friends and family is a great idea and you should go for it. Again, if you have a decent ear you don't need to know the Circle of Fifths. Now don't misunderstand me. If you have formal knowledge it will definitely enhance your skills and that's not a bad thing but lack of this knowledge should not be a showstopper. That's what I like about BIAB. It allows me to explore concepts I have in mind and see how they turn out. I've include a link to a song I wrote and produced a couple of years ago where I created the string and horn arrangements, Played them (by ear) through a MIDI keyboard and virtual synth, and a couple of groups covered this song. https://youtu.be/Ptvtu-xGJOoAgain, I think this is a great idea and you should go for it !!

While I agree that sometimes Eddie is a little overbearing in his thoughts, I definitely do not think he needs all the roasting for an OPINION. I have always wondered why someone who repeatedly in the past has identified himself as both a misanthrope and a misogynist, participates in various social media. The only answers that I can come up with are that he actually does not hate people as much as he would have us believe and actively craves the social interaction, OR that he truly does hate people and is seeking a means to skewer people, put them down, and make himself feel superior. If it is the latter, then you have to give credit to the fact that he is getting exactly the reaction he was hoping for, so I wouldn't be so critical of the response. And THAT is my OPINION. For what its worth.

I have had a number of one on ones with Eddie and I can tell you that he does not hate people. He just has some very strong opinions and he is not afraid to express them. Which then brings up the important question of why he calls himself a misanthrope. I would point out that he does much more than state a strong opinion on something. Its one thing to think that its important to know theory. That is an opinion. Its another thing to declare that people are "sneaking in under the tent" if they follow a different path. That is judgmental.
