I saw that, although the model 12 functions as a DAW controller, where the 16 does not.

Nice catch Matt. I didn't notice that.
The 12 would be more than enough for me. I just want to record some of my original songs with my son before I croak.
I've always regretted not recording with my Dad before he died. He was a MUCH better singer than I am.
The idea of just plugging in an input, setting your levels and simply punching the record button is very appealing to me.

Bob, I’m really glad you posted about this. I’m a comp. sci. prof. so working with computers doesn’t faze me, and yet it’s very appealing to see a contemporary tool that works so well and so easily as the tools with which we first became familiar.
I had sworn off Tascam equipment after they orphaned my FW-1884 MIDI and audio control surface and refused to release updated Windows drivers even though they had them. But this makes me reconsider.

For $500? No brainer. Less than what a decent guitar costs. I won't buy one, but you more active musicians would probably really love it. I started on a Tascam 8 track and it was simple to use and did a good job. Actually sad I sold it (for way too little money) because it was great for quick scratchpad type work.

I’m just sorry that it lacks the 1884’s motorized faders. Hopefully USB won’t go the way of firewire.

Nice.... I bet Charlie will like that one. Yes I do. They are very stable and versatile units and really look good on a studio desk. My problem is the three stand alone units I already have plus three audio interfaces....  To Bob: I recommend you also look at the Tascam DP24 or DP32 for comparison. The Model 12 is a more full featured Mixer but is intended to interface and interact with a computer DAW for editing recorded audio it's overall features are weighted toward live performances. In contrast, the DP24/32 Mixer has less Mixer features but has a very robust but simple to use built in DAW and is completely capable of completing recording projects with no connection to a computer at all. It has more effects, models and pro quality presets than the Model 12. The DP24/32 is a dedicated multi track recorder and the Model 12 is a hybrid that will certainly do the job of tracking and also functions wonderfully as an analog mixer where the DP24/32 will falter as a live mixer.

Odd man out I guess - for which there is ample precedent:) I did my first recording in a studio in the mid sixties, had a Teac sound on sound in the 70’s, went thru Tascam 4/8 tracks in the 90’s and had a VF160 Fostex when we left our band in 2003 and quit playing and recording for years. I switched from the Windows world (thankfully) to a Mac in 2011. It came with GarageBand which seemed interesting and about the same time I heard about BiaB. In short order I purchased my current DAW Logic Pro ... $199 for life, all upgrades free, zillions of amp sims, effects and sounds and I have never looked back. For me Logic seemed easy to learn and easy to use (at my level  ). I can’t imagine working again w/o the ability to revert to earlier auto saves, w/o volume lanes, w/o fx automation lanes, w/o locking a track to a groove track, w/o quickly doubling a RD snare, w/o quickly changing an RT note for a better segue, w/o loading 6-8 regenerated RT tracks to comp one that better works with the project much more. And like BiaB I only use a small fraction of its capabilities. In no way is it my intention to disparage the use of hardware...just this old phart’s perspective. Bud

It would be nice if it did have motorized faders, but that's not a deal breaker for me.
I'm mainly attracted to the simplicity of being able to record without a computer and then later plug it in to a DAW for final mixdown if needed.
It looks like something I could use right out of the box.

This video, recently posted, uses the Cakewalk DAW to automate a mix to the Tascam DP-24 or 32 using MIDI. The Model 12 has DAW control and looking at the Model 12 manual, the Model 12 recorded tracks on the SD card may also have the capability to be automated by a software DAW like Cakewalk or hardware MIDI sequencer. If so, this puts both the Tascam multi track recorders and these new hybrid mixers on equal par with digital mixers costing thousands of dollars more than these units. Particularly for the DP-24/32 devices, they have internal digital faders that react to the MIDI control messages so they function exactly as a motorized fader would... The thing that concerns me with the DP units is that I think they're on their way out. I got "orphaned" with a Roland mixer and Logic Pro bundle and I don't want a repeat.
The Model 12 can also serve serve as an analog mixer for a duo or trio.
It can also work as a stand alone Portastudio or as an audio interface for a DAW. This seems to be the way Tascam is going for now. Might want to stock up on SD cards if I get one though.
I need new steps for the cabin right now so that'll be my next purchase.

Yes, the DP 24/32 series mixers aren’t very useful as live mixers although they can be used. Also Tascam made a mistake removing Midi ports. Having a DP 24 keeps me from having any justification to upgrade to the Model 12.

I have a Tascam Model 12. I am new to BIAB. I tried feeding BIAB through the USB port on the back of the Tascam Model 12. I had to pick the ASIO driver. Unfortunately, it skipped and hissed. I am wondering if I should interface the Tascam Model 12 with PreSonus Studio One 5 and then feed the BIAB into the PreSonus first. Any thoughts?

Looking at the pics of the Model 12 on Tascam's site, the only USB port I see is an output, not an input.
There's a lot of other folks on the forum who know more about this than I do. It seems to me that it's primarily geared toward feeding live inputs into the unit. That is exactly what I would want the Model 12 for.
I don't plan on using it with BIAB unless it would be for either a drum track or click track. Then I think I would be able to do that as an audio input for a single track.
I would assume that if you're wanting to import multiple tracks from BIAB then you would use the Model 12 as an audio interface with a DAW.
