Is that really what could be called a "Song" as such? Or just what is a "song" anyway? Have fun! The words were first printed in 1852 but to a different tune, one of many before the current melody. The familiar tune first appeared in the The Franklin Square Song Collection, published 1881 by J. P. McCaskey. The song is credited to Eliphalet Oram Lyte who probably composed it. You'll find it in Vol. 1 on pg 69. https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100833959 Lyte (1842–1913) was a school principal best known for his grammar books for use in the classroom but was also a prolific composer. Since you ask.....generally speaking: A song has lyrics (however trite/minimal) which are sung by a singer(s). If one calls their creative effort a song I'd bet the vast majority of listeners will expect to hear a vocalist(s) singing. If one is looking for ways to split hairs in this context have at it. Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
