A stunned bird sitting on the sidewalk a few weeks ago led to this ballad; I did what I could to help without hurting and it was gone a few seconds later. That got me thinking about the few times I`ve done something for someone in trouble that left me with good feelings that stuck...although I`ve no idea whether the person would remember.
All rolled up with a little philosophy:

Eyes Wide Blind

RealTracks in song 2870 Piano Celtic Air 085
RealTracks in song: 3267:Cello, Background CelticAirFlowingNatalie Ev 085
vocal oohs/aahs

Eyes Wide Blind

clinging in the rigging
to reach hard harbour town
took all her wild bird poise
refugee eyes still surprised
she flew into the glass
one time I didn`t laugh with the boys

held her to be kind
her eyes wide blind

searching her circuits
`til lights turned green again
she walked away I wouldn`t say her heart was read
enduring things to glimpse her wings
somewhere in a crowd
the backrow kid singing in his head

held her to be kind
her eyes wide blind

lay me under senseless stones
my bones tell of the time
I held a bird
her eyes wide blind

is our living only trying
to do no more than no harm
boats come and go who sees their wake

hold someone to be kind
our eyes wide blind

lay me under senseless stones
my bones tell of the time
I held a bird
her eyes wide blind

Wow. Very cool tune Robert. Very delicate vocal and loved piano framing the vocal. Loved the lyric.

Will & Scott:Thank you for listening and commenting. I listened again this morning and found something I didn`t like... a new version in a more comfortable key is on its way in a day or so.

Always nice to read that a bird inspired a song smile And what a beautiful simple tune it is this time. Touching poetic lyrics I can relate to, although I can only remember situations where I could have helped, but either I didn't realize it or I didn't know how. Simple arrangement lets your voice really shine and express fragile things in life.

Very nice picture, I like blue tits, they are small but perky and look like small punk rockers smile

Thanks Janne; my wee friend was also small but all green - the picture`s not mine. I prefer to compose as I walk; a camera would be a distraction.
Your appreciative comments on the vocal helped me change my thinking about a redo.I rarely sing to just a piano accompaniment so I`m glad I did this without the usual guitars and my fragile voice exposed!

The personal uplifting of doing good is rarely acknowledged these days.
Helping helps the helper of course.
Lovely, fragile thing Robert...just like the bird.

Robert,

A beautiful melody!

Your lyrics read like poetry. You paint pictures with words.

The piano and cello are perfect partners for your song.

Excellent vocal.

Robert,
Beauty. You accomplished a lot with ascetic backing. Lyrics are a treat. The only critical comment is, the ending of phrases have vocal artifacts. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Robert
Much enjoyed. The usual poetic lyrics and your vocal sounds good to me with the piano accompaniment. Nice use of the cello. On the subject of your inspiration, we have large windows in one corner of our living room that birds of various types occasionally attempt to fly through. The larger ones generally survive the encounter but the smaller ones are sometimes beyond help. Very sad.

Leon

As rayc said, you did a great job communicating fragility with the lyrics and your vocals.

I also liked what you did with the arrangement - nice build with the harmony, but still keeping in understated and personal.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Floyd,
I appreciate those positives- I had the melody in my head by the time I got home from the walk that day.

Misha,
Ok, I can hear some small sounds the breath tamer didn`t pick up, but maybe you are referring to my "T`s" and "D`s", word endings I have a habit of squishing and now try to make clear. Anyway- thanks for listening and commenting.

Hi Robert,

A sweet, sensitive song and a subject so nicely found. If you only use your eyes.
You can bring it so gentle. I loved it!

Was is on purpose that at the end of your song the piano sounded as if it was stuck (for a few nano seconds)?
Except that question the band did very well and of course you too!

"is our living only trying

hold someone to be kind
our eyes wide blind"

Janice wanted to single out these five lines. There's a lot packed
into that.

Your backstory reminded us of a fav quote albeit perhaps only very loosely related.
"Nobody made a bigger mistake than he who did nothing because he could do
only a little."

The piano and cello were perfect for your vocal and the lyric. Very nice.

We enjoyed it and being "bird folks" made it even more special.

Thank you Blue Attitude, Dero13, Janice & Bud for your listens and very kind comments.
Birchwood - I`m happy that you liked the song... and listened to those last few seconds
where I lazily looped the final piano note rather than regenerating the ending!
