The only way to "learn" to stay in time is to practice in time with a metronome preferably. Of course you can use BIAB as well (it keeps pretty good time!). Some of the best players in the world still practice to a metronome.. When I was recording some DCs for a group they could not keep time with a click track. But as soon as I used a simple drum track they stayed in time! Moral of the story maybe is if you can't keep time with a click track use a simple drum track.
The fitness trainer asked me, "What kind of a squat are you accustomed to doing?" I said, "Diddly."
