It might be a challenge to find what it was I watched, but 12 years ago maybe on basic cable I watched a fascinating documentary they went over the process in building various orchestral instruments. I remember one part that fascinated me was that certain violin strings are made from dried twisted animal intestines. I can't imagine the thought process that went into figuring out that one.

I've wondered the same thing. Surely it wasn't "we've built this violin, now what in the world are we going to use to make the strings?". Maybe it was "what are we going to do with all this excess animal intestines?"
