Have been trying to convert a Realtracks melody line (Piano 1405) to MIDI via Dropbox. Pleasantly surprised by overall accuracy, but it is prone to putting in rests before some bar endings and may also be adding more subtle problems.
Not sure of the process BIAB uses to convert Realtracks to MIDI, but Notation view shows all the notes correctly as far as I can tell. Is there a straightforward way of extracting Notation view to MIDI? My guess is that if this is possible the subsequent MIDI wouldn’t have velocity information, but I’d rather add in a velocity curve than carry out note-by-note comparison of two lengthy files to check for differences!
This is only possible if the real track has been transcribed for notation with the notes as midi data. Some have, some have not, note the transcription is only basic and will not show all the fine notation detail. You can tell if a track has this if there is an underscore under or before the style name. The piano track will nearly always have this as they use a special piano that produces both an audio output for the real track, and a midi note data stream for the notation, when originally recorded. You must start the transport (click play) to generate the realtrack and notation. All of the all midi styles will of course produce notation for all tracks. Have fun Mike
Allanmorrow - go to File > Save Special > Save Song As MIDI File, and click on the Options button. Make sure the Save RealCharts in MIDI Files box is checked and click OK. Then when you save the MIDI file, the file will have the MIDI notes for that Realtrack saved in it. As Mike mentioned, this only works if it's a RealTrack we have a transcription of.
Also, be aware that depending on the specific instrument, the MIDI may not have all of the nuances and articulations contained in the RealTrack.

To what Videotrack said, a long time ago when RealTracks were new, PG Music hired a few people to do transcriptions so that there would be notation. I did many sax solos and guitar solos. I worked until my MIDI in the left channel matched the RealTrack in the right channel.
Getting the articulations right was a compromise at best. For example, MIDI doesn’t allow for a scooped note on sax. I was also instructed not to work on dynamics. Thus if you were to take one of the soloists I did and connect that MIDI to a great MIDI synth, you would hear the right notes, but with no nuance like dynamics, attack, decay, pitch bend, etc. In other words, it would sound sterile.
The notation is primarily for educational value. One exception of which I am aware, noted above, is that their keyboard tracks are recorded directly on a digital keyboard, so they can sound really good.

Yes, Realtrack in question (1405) does have a Realchart.
Carried out 'Save Song as MIDI ...' but unfortunately the playback 'rests' are still apparent. Concerning comments about the limits of MIDI reproducing a full performance, it made me wonder if the piano's long sustain is confusing the MIDI process and what should be a long sustained note is being interpreted as a much shorter one?
I'm also not clear about viewing Realcharts. Is it the Realchart that can be seen when viewing notation for any particular Realtrack, or is it viewable as a separate entity, or something else entirely?
Should anyone be able to help further, MIDI and MP3 versions of the track are attached. The disappearance of sound is not too subtle and to me resembles extreme 'gating'.
